Book Smart: Your Comfort Starts Here
The best journeys are decided before you step on the bus. When booking online, don't just sort by price. Check recent reviews for feedback on cleanliness, punctuality, and whether charging points actually work. For overnight trips, an AC sleeper or semi-sleeper
is almost always worth the extra fare over a standard bus. When choosing your spot, aim for a berth or seat in the middle of the bus, away from the front door and the rear wheels. This area offers the smoothest ride, minimizing bumps and engine noise. A lower berth is generally more stable and easier to access, while an upper berth can offer more privacy.
The Carry-On Kit: Pack for Peace of Mind
What you keep with you makes all the difference. Your main luggage can go in the hold, but your carry-on backpack should contain everything you need until morning. The essentials include a one-litre water bottle and some light, non-messy snacks like granola bars or biscuits. For hygiene, pack hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and tissues. Most importantly, prepare a “sleep kit” containing an eye mask to block out lights from toll plazas and passing vehicles, and earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones to mute road noise and chatty co-passengers. Finally, since on-board charging points can be unreliable, a fully charged power bank is non-negotiable.
Dress for Comfort, Not Just Arrival
Bus temperatures can be unpredictable. They often start warm but can get surprisingly cold overnight once the AC kicks in. The solution is to dress in comfortable, loose-fitting layers. A light jacket, hoodie, or a shawl is crucial for staying warm. Many regular travellers also recommend wearing or packing a pair of socks, as cold feet are a common reason for waking up in the middle of the night. Comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off are also a good idea for when the bus makes rest stops.
Settle In and Secure Your Space
Once you board, take a few minutes to set up your space for the night. If you have a curtain, draw it for privacy. Arrange your neck pillow and blanket before you get tired. Keep your small bag with valuables like your phone, wallet, and headphones tucked securely beside you or under your pillow, not in the aisle or on a vacant seat. It’s also wise to use the restroom before boarding, as the timing and condition of mid-journey stops can be uncertain. Arriving at the boarding point 15-20 minutes early helps you settle in without stress.
Prioritise Your Onboard Safety
While sleeper buses are a widely used mode of transport, taking sensible precautions is key. Always choose a reputable operator with good safety reviews when you book. Many private sleeper coaches are custom-built in workshops, and safety standards can vary significantly regarding emergency exits and the use of fire-retardant materials. Before settling in, identify the location of the emergency exit. Let a friend or family member know your bus details, route, and estimated arrival time. During rest stops, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid wandering far from the bus, especially at night in unfamiliar areas.
