Start with Serving Size and Protein Content
The first thing to check is the serving size, which is often listed in both scoops and grams. This context is crucial for understanding everything else on the label. Next, look at the protein per serving. A quality powder should offer 20 to 30 grams of protein per serving. Some
brands may use a large scoop size to make their protein content seem high, so a good practice is to calculate the protein percentage: divide the grams of protein by the serving size in grams. A respectable product will be composed of at least 75-80% protein by weight, indicating fewer fillers.
Know Your Protein Source
Not all protein is created equal. The source determines how your body absorbs it and its amino acid profile. Whey, a milk byproduct, is the most popular because it's fast-absorbing, making it ideal for post-workout recovery. Whey isolate is a more filtered version with less fat and lactose than whey concentrate. Casein, another milk protein, digests slowly, making it suitable for a pre-bedtime shake. For those who are plant-based or lactose intolerant, soy, pea, hemp, and rice proteins are excellent options. Soy is a complete protein, containing all essential amino acids, while blends of pea and rice can also provide a complete profile.
Scan for Unwanted Sugars and Sweeteners
Many flavoured protein powders contain added sugars or artificial sweeteners to improve taste. If your goal is weight loss or lean muscle, look for powders with minimal to no added sugar; ideally under 5 grams per serving. Check the ingredient list for terms like dextrin or maltodextrin, which are sweeteners made from starch that can spike your blood sugar. Common artificial sweeteners include sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium. While generally considered safe by regulatory bodies, some people experience digestive issues or headaches from them. Natural, zero-calorie alternatives like stevia and monk fruit are often better tolerated.
Beware of Fillers and Gums
The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Manufacturers sometimes add fillers to bulk up the product and reduce costs. Ingredients like skim milk powders, coconut flour, or psyllium add volume but little nutritional value and can cause digestive distress for some. Thickeners and gums such as xanthan gum, guar gum, and carrageenan are used to create a smoother texture but can lead to bloating and gas. A high-quality protein powder shouldn't need a long list of additives to be effective.
Dodge 'Proprietary Blends' and 'Amino Spiking'
If you see the term “proprietary blend” on a label, be cautious. This allows manufacturers to list a mix of ingredients without disclosing the exact amount of each one. This can hide the fact that the powder contains very little of the expensive, effective ingredients advertised. Another deceptive practice is “amino spiking,” where cheap, non-essential amino acids like glycine and taurine are added to the powder. Because standard protein tests measure nitrogen content, and all amino acids contain nitrogen, this practice artificially inflates the protein number on the label, cheating you out of the complete protein you're paying for.
Look for Third-Party Testing Seals
The supplement industry is not as tightly regulated as food or medicine. Alarming studies have found that some protein powders contain contaminants like heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium) or BPA from packaging. To ensure a product is safe and contains what it claims, look for a third-party certification seal on the label. Reputable organizations like NSF (especially their 'Certified for Sport' seal), Informed-Choice, or the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) test products for banned substances and contaminants, providing an extra layer of confidence in your purchase.
