The Meteorological Outlook
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the onset of the northeast monsoon over the southern peninsula around October 15. This coincides with the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and is triggered by cyclonic circulations over the region.
As a result, a prolonged wet spell is expected across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and parts of Andhra Pradesh, lasting for several days with varying intensity. Authorities are urging residents and travellers to prepare for widespread showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, which can significantly impact travel plans.
Kerala: Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued
Kerala is on high alert, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for several districts, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall (12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours). For October 15, an orange alert is active for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts. Yellow alerts, signifying heavy rainfall, have been issued for most other districts. The hilly and high-range districts like Idukki and Pathanamthitta are particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash floods, making travel on ghat roads extremely risky. Fishermen have also been advised to be cautious. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are expected to continue through October 20.
Tamil Nadu: Focus on Ghats and Coastal Areas
In Tamil Nadu, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places, particularly in the ghat districts of the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Theni. An alert is in place for October 15, with numerous other districts including Salem, Erode, and Kanniyakumari also expected to receive heavy showers. Travellers heading to hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal must exercise extreme caution. Ghat roads in these areas are susceptible to landslides and poor visibility due to mist and fog, especially during night travel. Recent advisories have already highlighted restrictions on some routes like the Kalhatty Ghat road to Ooty, so checking with local authorities before travel is essential.
Karnataka: Coastal and Southern Interior Regions on Watch
Karnataka is also bracing for significant rainfall, with alerts focused on coastal and southern interior regions. South Interior Karnataka is expected to see widespread showers with isolated very heavy rainfall predicted around October 16. Coastal Karnataka is likely to experience heavy rainfall from October 16 to 18. Areas in the Western Ghats, such as the Malenadu region, are prone to disruptions. Travellers on routes connecting Bengaluru to coastal areas or the ghat sections should anticipate potential delays and hazardous driving conditions due to waterlogging and reduced visibility.
Key Safety Guidelines for Travellers
Given the weather warnings, non-essential travel, especially through hilly and low-lying areas, should be postponed. If you must travel, adhere to the following safety measures: Stay Updated: Continuously monitor forecasts from the IMD and advisories from local disaster management authorities. Avoid Ghat Roads and Night Travel: Landslides and poor visibility make ghat roads especially dangerous. Avoid driving on these routes after dark. Vehicle Preparedness: Ensure your vehicle's tyres, brakes, and headlights are in optimal condition. Drive slowly and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Beware of Waterlogging: Do not drive through flooded roads, as the depth can be deceptive and hide open manholes or other dangers. Emergency Kit: Carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, first-aid supplies, drinking water, and dry food. Keep your electronic devices charged. Emergency Contacts: Save contact numbers for local police and district disaster management authorities.
