The Tale of Two Getaways
For every resident of Bengaluru, the call of the Western Ghats is a familiar and welcome invitation. The promise of winding roads, misty mornings, and a refreshing change of scenery is often too good to resist. Two destinations, in particular, stand out
as premier weekend escapes: Chikmagalur, the cradle of Indian coffee, and Wayanad, a verdant paradise in Kerala. Though both offer a respite in nature, the journey to each is a unique experience. One route takes you through the heart of Karnataka's history into fragrant coffee country, while the other winds through royal Mysore and dense forests into a land of spice plantations and waterfalls. Choosing between them depends entirely on the kind of escape you’re looking for.
Route 1: The Aromatic Trail to Chikmagalur
The drive to Chikmagalur is a journey into the heart of Karnataka’s coffee land. The most popular and efficient route is via National Highway 75, a journey of about 245 kilometres that typically takes between 4.5 to 5.5 hours. This well-maintained highway makes for a smooth drive, especially up to the town of Hassan. From Hassan, the final 60-kilometre stretch transforms into a scenic ghat road, where the air begins to carry the distinct aroma of coffee blossoms and the landscape is painted with the deep green of sprawling estates. It's this final leg of the journey that truly feels like an entrance into another world, leaving the plains behind for the rolling hills that define Chikmagalur.
En Route to the Coffee Capital
This route is not just about speed; it's also rich with history. A small detour near Channarayapatna can take you to the magnificent monolithic statue at Shravanabelagola. Alternatively, once you pass Hassan, you are on the doorstep of the famed Hoysala temple circuit. You can easily visit the stunning Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, a masterpiece of 12th-century architecture, which lies directly on one of the main paths to Chikmagalur. A short drive from there is the equally impressive Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu. These sites offer a perfect cultural break, allowing you to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in centuries of history before you ascend into the coffee hills. Hassan itself serves as a convenient midway point for a lunch break.
Route 2: The Green Corridor to Wayanad
The journey to Wayanad, a district in northeastern Kerala, is a different kind of beautiful. Covering approximately 280-300 kilometres, this road trip usually takes about 6 to 7 hours. The most recommended path takes you down the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway before connecting to NH 766. This route is famous for its incredible scenic diversity. After passing through the historic city of Mysore, the drive takes you through Gundlupet and into the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Driving through the forest corridor, with the high chance of spotting deer, elephants, and peacocks, is a highlight in itself. Following the forest, the road begins a thrilling ascent up the Thamarassery ghat section, a series of winding hairpin bends that offer breathtaking views of the valleys below as you cross into Kerala.
Along the Path to Paradise
The Wayanad route is packed with natural and historical attractions. You can make a stop in Mysore to visit the grand Mysore Palace or the serene Brindavan Gardens. As you proceed, the drive through Bandipur National Park offers its own wild charm. It is crucial to note that the Bandipur forest gate has restricted hours, typically closing to traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM, so plan your travel times accordingly. Once in Wayanad, the adventure continues with attractions like the ancient Edakkal Caves, with their prehistoric etchings, and the stunning three-tiered Soochipara Waterfalls. The region is a haven for nature lovers, with trekking opportunities like Chembra Peak and the vast Banasura Sagar Dam to explore.
Coffee Hills or Green Valleys?
So, which journey should you choose? If your idea of a perfect getaway involves crisp mountain air, the aroma of roasted coffee beans, and exploring historic temples, the road to Chikmagalur is your best bet. The journey is slightly shorter and the destinations en route are rich with heritage. On the other hand, if you crave a drive through dense forests, the thrill of spotting wildlife, and the allure of waterfalls and spice plantations, then the route to Wayanad is calling. This trip is more about immersing yourself in raw, untamed nature. Chikmagalur is for the coffee connoisseur and history buff; Wayanad is for the wildlife enthusiast and adventurer. Both routes promise a memorable escape from city life, with stunning landscapes unfolding with every kilometre.
