The Landmark Route and Timings
The Vande Bharat Express now provides a direct connection between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, a service that began on April 30, 2026. This service is a major milestone for the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, finally connecting the valley
to the rest of India’s rail network. Currently, two Vande Bharat trains operate on this route. For instance, train number 26401 departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar around 11:10 AM, completing the 269-kilometre journey in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The return train, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. These services run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays.
An Engineering Masterpiece
The journey is as remarkable as the destination, taking passengers across some of India's most stunning engineering feats. The route includes the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. This bridge is a spectacle in itself and a testament to modern engineering. Another critical structure is the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, which spans a deep valley. The train also navigates numerous tunnels, including the T-80 tunnel, which is one of the longest in the country. These structures were essential to conquering the challenging terrain of the Pir Panjal range.
The Onboard Journey Experience
The Vande Bharat Express on this route is specially designed for the region's climate. The trains are equipped with advanced heating systems to ensure passenger comfort during cold weather and can operate smoothly in sub-zero temperatures. Inside, passengers can expect the standard modern amenities of the Vande Bharat fleet, including AC chair cars (CC) and executive chair cars (EC), large windows for panoramic views, and on-board catering. The seats are rotatable, allowing travellers to fully immerse themselves in the spectacular Himalayan landscapes. This comfortable and climate-controlled journey is a significant upgrade from the often arduous and weather-dependent road trip along National Highway 44.
Key Stations and Booking Details
Along its route from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, the Vande Bharat Express makes a few key stops. These include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station in Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal. These stops provide crucial connectivity for pilgrims heading to Vaishno Devi and for residents across the region. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website or mobile app, and booking typically opens 60 days in advance. Fares for the AC Chair Car are approximately ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car costs around ₹1,320 to ₹1,515. Given the high demand, it's advisable to book tickets well in advance.
Future Expansion and Growing Demand
The launch of the direct Jammu-Srinagar service has been met with overwhelming demand, with trains often running at full occupancy since their inauguration. In response to this popularity, Indian Railways has already increased the number of coaches on these trains from 16 to 20. Furthermore, plans are already approved for a third Vande Bharat service between Jammu and Srinagar to cater to the growing number of passengers. This new service, train number 26407/26408, will also run via Udhampur, further enhancing connectivity. This rapid expansion underscores the transformative impact the railway is having on travel in Jammu and Kashmir.
