Start With a Lightweight Bag
Your packing journey begins before you even place a single item inside. The bag itself is a huge contributor to your total weight. Hardshell suitcases can weigh over 3kg empty, eating up nearly half your allowance. Instead, opt for a lightweight soft-shell
bag or a travel backpack. These are often designed to weigh between 1-1.5kg, instantly giving you more weight for your actual belongings. When selecting a bag, also check the dimensions. Most Indian domestic carriers like Air India and Air India Express have a standard dimension limit around 55cm x 40cm x 20cm for the main cabin bag. Choosing a bag that is both lightweight and compliant is the first, most crucial step to success.
Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of essential items that can be easily mixed and matched. The goal is to create the maximum number of outfits from the fewest pieces. For a one-week trip, you don't need seven distinct outfits. Instead, focus on a neutral colour palette—like black, navy, beige, or olive—for your main items. Every top should work with every bottom. A good formula for a week is three to four tops, and two versatile bottoms (like one pair of jeans and one pair of comfortable trousers or a skirt). Rely on small accessories like scarves to add variety.
Master a Few Packing Techniques
How you pack is as important as what you pack. Rolling your clothes, especially casual items like t-shirts and trousers, is a proven space-saver. This technique can free up a significant amount of room compared to folding. For more formal items like a blazer or dress shirt, a neat fold will help prevent wrinkles. Another pro-tip is to utilise every inch of space. Stuff socks, underwear, or small electronic items inside your shoes to fill empty voids. Packing cubes or compression bags can also be game-changers, helping to organize your items and squeeze out excess air, making everything more compact.
Downsize Your Toiletries and Electronics
Liquids and electronics are notoriously heavy. Instead of bringing full-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, switch to solid toiletries. Solid shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and soap bars are lightweight, last a long time, and aren't subject to the 100ml liquid restriction. If you must bring liquids, decant them into small, travel-sized reusable bottles. When it comes to electronics, be ruthless. Do you really need a laptop, a tablet, and a Kindle? Your smartphone can likely handle most of your needs. Carry one universal power adapter and a slim power bank instead of multiple chargers. These small swaps can shave a surprising amount of weight off your total.
Wear Your Heaviest Items
This is one of the oldest and most effective tricks in the book. Your airline weighs your bag, not you. Identify your bulkiest items—typically a jacket, a pair of jeans, and your heaviest shoes like boots or sneakers—and wear them on the plane. This single move can free up a kilo or more in your bag. You can always take the jacket off once you're on board. Layering a couple of lightweight tops can also save space instead of packing a single thick jumper. It might feel a bit bulky as you go through security, but the freedom of a lighter bag is well worth it.
A Sample 7kg Week-Long Packing List
To put it all together, here’s what a well-planned 7kg bag could look like. The bag itself weighs about 1.5kg, leaving you with 5.5kg for your items. Clothing (approx. 2.5kg): 4 mix-and-match tops, 1 pair of jeans (worn on the plane), 1 pair of lightweight trousers or shorts, 1 dress or versatile shirt, 5 sets of underwear and socks, and 1 lightweight jacket (worn on the plane). Shoes (approx. 1kg): 1 pair of sneakers (worn on the plane) and 1 pair of lightweight sandals or flats. Toiletries (approx. 0.5kg): Solid shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant, a toothbrush, and travel-sized toothpaste and sunscreen. Electronics & Miscellaneous (approx. 1.5kg): Smartphone, a power bank, a universal charger, essential documents, and any medications.
