Know Before You Go: Visa and Budget
As of mid-2026, Sri Lanka offers a visa-free entry scheme for Indian passport holders, but it's important to understand the details. While the visa fee is waived for a 30-day tourist stay, you are still required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization
(ETA) online before you depart. This process is simple but mandatory. Arriving without a pre-approved ETA could lead to complications. For a 5-day budget trip, plan for approximately ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 per person, excluding flights. This can be managed by staying in guesthouses or hostels, eating at local restaurants, and using public transport. Booking flights from South Indian cities like Chennai or Kochi 4-6 weeks in advance often yields the best prices.
Day 1: Arrival and Kandy's Calm
Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo. From the airport, the most budget-friendly option to get to Kandy is by taking a bus or arranging a shared taxi. The journey takes around 3-4 hours. After checking into your guesthouse, spend the evening acclimatizing with a peaceful stroll around the scenic Kandy Lake. For dinner, explore the small eateries offering authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry, which are both delicious and incredibly affordable. This gentle start sets a relaxed tone for the cultural explorations ahead.
Day 2: The Cultural Heart of Sri Lanka
Dedicate your second day to Kandy’s rich heritage. Start your morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world. Remember to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. Afterwards, you can visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, which showcases thousands of plant species. In the evening, immerse yourself in local tradition by attending a Kandyan cultural dance show, a vibrant performance of dance and drumming that tells ancient stories. These shows are a staple of the Kandy experience and offer a fantastic glimpse into the island's artistic soul.
Day 3: Journey to the South Coast
This will be your primary travel day. Getting from the hill country of Kandy to the southern beaches of Mirissa is a journey that will take up a significant portion of your day, typically around 6-7 hours. The most practical budget option is to take a train from Kandy towards the coast (often with a change at Maradana near Colombo) and then continue to Mirissa. Alternatively, a combination of buses via Colombo is also possible. While long, the train journey offers stunning views of Sri Lanka's changing landscapes, from misty hills to lush lowlands. Plan to start early in the morning to arrive in Mirissa with enough time to check in and catch the sunset.
Day 4: Mirissa's Sun, Sand, and Sea
Wake up to the sound of waves and get ready for a day of coastal bliss. Mirissa is famous for whale watching (best during the season from November to April), so if you're visiting at the right time, consider an early morning boat tour. Later, you can relax on Mirissa Beach, go for a swim, or try your hand at surfing in the gentle waves. One of the most iconic spots is Coconut Tree Hill, a small private grove offering panoramic views of the ocean, especially magical at sunrise or sunset. Another must-visit is Parrot Rock, a small tidal island you can climb for another beautiful viewpoint. For food, the beachfront is lined with shacks serving fresh seafood.
Day 5: One Last Swim and Departure
Enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast and perhaps a last-minute dip in the ocean at Turtle Bay, where you might get lucky and spot sea turtles feeding close to the shore. Depending on your flight schedule, you'll need to travel from Mirissa back to Bandaranaike International Airport. The journey by road can take around 2.5-3 hours via the Southern Expressway. You can hire a taxi, use a ride-sharing app, or take a comfortable AC bus to Colombo and then another bus or taxi to the airport. This packed itinerary requires careful planning, but it delivers an unforgettable taste of Sri Lanka's diverse charms.
