In a major boost for travellers, Indian Railways has launched a new daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) directly with Sawantwadi Road in South Konkan. This service was introduced to meet a long-standing
demand for better connectivity to the region, especially for tourists and families. The train covers the roughly 510-kilometre route, making key stops at popular hubs like Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal. Operating with modern LHB coaches for a more comfortable journey, the service includes an overnight schedule from Mumbai, which is particularly convenient for weekend travellers hoping to maximize their holiday time. This new link runs in addition to other popular services like the Tejas Express and Vande Bharat Express, which offer high-speed connections to stations along the Konkan line, further enhancing travel options.
Weekend Itinerary: Ratnagiri and Ganpatipule
One of the most accessible destinations for a short holiday is the Ratnagiri-Ganpatipule belt. Alight at Ratnagiri station, a major halt for the new service and other trains. From here, the serene temple town of Ganpatipule is just a short taxi or local bus ride away. Famous for its 400-year-old Ganesha temple located right on the shore, Ganpatipule offers pristine beaches perfect for relaxation. You can spend a day exploring the temple and the main beach, and then head to the nearby Aare Ware beach, a stunning twin beach offering breathtaking views of the coastline. From Kudal station, you can easily reach the popular beach destination of Tarkarli, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, white sand, and opportunities for snorkelling and other water sports. A short distance away is the historic Sindhudurg Fort, a formidable sea fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The train's terminus at Sawantwadi Road provides access to the town of Sawantwadi, known for its wooden toys and vibrant culture, as well as the nearby hill station of Amboli and the beaches of Vengurla. This makes it a perfect base for exploring the southernmost part of Maharashtra's coast.

It is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, as reservations open 60 days prior to the journey date. The new daily CSMT-Sawantwadi Express (Train No. 15087/15088) offers an overnight journey from Mumbai, arriving in the Konkan region the next day, allowing for a full weekend of exploration. For the best views of the valleys and coastline when travelling south from Mumbai, try to get a window seat on the right-hand side of the train.
