The New Visa Waiver Program Explained
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a pilot program specifically for the Indian market. This initiative is designed to make travel to Abu Dhabi more attractive by covering the cost of a UAE entry visa. It's important
to note this is not a blanket visa-free entry policy for all Indian citizens; rather, it's a targeted tourism promotion where the visa fee is waived for those who meet specific booking criteria. The program will initially support up to 20,000 visas. The standard fee, which is approximately Dhs 285 (around ₹6,900), is covered by DCT Abu Dhabi, representing a significant saving for individuals and families.
Are You Eligible? Key Conditions
To qualify for the visa fee waiver, Indian travellers must meet several conditions. First, you must hold a valid Indian passport and be travelling from India. The core requirement is booking a holiday package that includes a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. This package must also include a return flight ticket to India. Crucially, the booking must be made through a participating travel partner or an approved online travel agency, such as MakeMyTrip. A flight-only or hotel-only booking will not qualify for this complimentary visa offer.
How to Secure Your Free Visa
The process for obtaining the free visa is handled through the travel provider. Instead of applying independently, travellers must book their qualifying holiday package with a participating agency. The agency will then process the visa application on the traveller's behalf. These agencies can work through a DCT-appointed Destination Management Company (DMC), which settles the cost directly with the tourism department, or use their own partners and get reimbursed. For the traveller, the process is streamlined: book an eligible package, submit the necessary documents to your travel agent, and they handle the rest.
Important Dates and Limitations
This is a limited-time pilot scheme. The offer is valid for travel that takes place between August 1, 2026, and October 31, 2026. These dates refer to the actual travel period, not just the booking window, so your trip must be completed by the end of October. As the program is limited to the first 20,000 visas, travellers are advised to plan and book their trips well in advance to ensure they can take advantage of the offer. Always confirm with your travel partner that your booking qualifies for the visa fee waiver before finalising payment.
Distinguishing from Other Visa Types
It's essential to understand that this offer is distinct from other UAE visa options. This is a tourist visa promotion for a specific type of booking in Abu Dhabi. It is different from the standard 48-hour or 96-hour transit visas that are often sponsored by UAE-based airlines like Etihad for passengers with long layovers. Those transit visas are for short stopovers and have their own set of rules and fees. Furthermore, this promotion does not change the rules for visa-on-arrival, which is available to Indian passport holders who hold valid visas from the US, UK, or EU, among other criteria. This offer is specifically for a pre-arranged entry visa for a hotel stay of three nights or more.
