Dubai, a city synonymous with futuristic skylines, is turning a glittering eye to its past. A new walkway is planned for its famous Gold District, creating a dazzling path that literally paves the way to the heart of its trading heritage.
A Glimmering New Attraction
Dubai is preparing
to add another unique attraction to its landscape: a walkway made using 24-carat gold, expected to open before the end of 2026. Planned for the city's celebrated Gold District, the project is being promoted as the world's first and longest gold walkway. According to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior official at the Dubai Gold District, the walkway is scheduled to open within the next two months and will offer residents and tourists a distinctive experience. While exact details on its length and the amount of gold to be used remain under wraps, the project is part of a broader strategy to enhance Dubai's position as a global tourist destination and a premier hub for gold trading.
The Original 'City of Gold'
To understand the new walkway, you have to appreciate Dubai's deep connection to gold. Long before it became a metropolis of towering skyscrapers, Dubai's identity as the 'City of Gold' was forged in the bustling lanes of the Deira Gold Souk. Dating back to the early 20th century, the souk evolved into a vital trading hub where merchants from across the Arabian Gulf, India, and Persia gathered. This history is woven into the very fabric of the area, a place where craftsmanship and commerce created a legacy that continues today, with over 1,000 retailers making it one of the most significant gold trading centres in the world.
Bridging Past and Present
The new walkway is a key feature of the larger Deira Enrichment Project, a massive undertaking by developer Ithra Dubai to revitalise the city's historic commercial heart. This ambitious project aims to extend the old neighbourhood towards the waterfront, creating a modern mixed-use community with residences, offices, hotels, and shops. A central piece of this is the Gold Souk Extension, which opened in 2022. It was designed to echo the charm of the original souk while providing modern amenities like shaded walkways and better transport links. The new gold path will further connect the historic souk with these new developments, creating a seamless journey for visitors through the story of Dubai's gold trade.
More Than Just a Tourist Spot
The walkway and the broader revitalization are about more than just creating a photo opportunity. They represent a strategic investment in the area's economic future. The Dubai Gold District has seen significant growth recently, with a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery shops since the start of 2026. The project is designed to support this boom, accommodating more businesses and attracting more visitors. Officials also hope the development will host a major gold and jewellery exhibition, positioning it as the largest of its kind in the Middle East. This blend of preserving culture while boosting commerce is a hallmark of Dubai's development philosophy.
