An Engineering Marvel and a Game Changer
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley meant navigating the unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway or relying on costly flights. The completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has revolutionised travel to the region.
This ambitious project, which includes architectural wonders like the Chenab Bridge—the world's highest railway bridge—provides a reliable, all-weather connection. The introduction of Vande Bharat Express services on this route significantly cuts down travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to just under five hours, a journey that could previously take a full day by road. This newfound accessibility is a massive boost for tourism, making it easier than ever to plan a trip to this paradise on Earth.
Understanding the New Train Route
The direct train service connects Jammu Tawi with Srinagar, running through some of the most scenic and rugged terrains in the country. Key stations on this route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal before reaching Srinagar. The service is primarily operated by the modern Vande Bharat Express trains, which are known for their comfort and speed. Due to high demand, Indian Railways has already approved multiple services on this line, including a third Vande Bharat Express, ensuring more capacity and flexibility for travellers. These trains are designed to operate even in harsh winter conditions, offering a dependable travel option year-round.
Key Stops and Nearby Attractions
Each stop on the new rail line serves as a gateway to different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. From Jammu Tawi, you begin the ascent into the mountains. Katra is the base camp for the holy pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Further along, stations like Banihal and Anantnag provide access to the wider Kashmir Valley. From Anantnag station, you can hire a taxi to visit the famous meadows of Pahalgam or the springs of Verinag and Kokernag. Srinagar station itself, located in Nowgam, is your entry point to the summer capital. From here, Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens, and the historic old city are all easily accessible by local transport.
