Understanding the Annual Ticket Scramble
Every festival season, millions of people travel from major metropolitan hubs to their hometowns to celebrate with family. This mass movement puts incredible pressure on the Indian Railways network. Routes connecting cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru,
and Chennai to states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Kerala see demand skyrocket. Regular trains get booked out months in advance, leaving many scrambling for last-minute solutions that often don't exist. This predictable surge is precisely why Indian Railways introduces a critical, but often underutilised, solution: festival special trains.
Your Lifeline: Festival Special Trains
To manage the immense holiday rush, Indian Railways operates hundreds of 'special' train services across its various zones. These are additional trains, often designated with a train number starting with '0', scheduled on high-demand routes specifically for festival periods like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. These services are not part of the regular timetable and are announced progressively as the festive season approaches. Zonal railways like Central Railway, Northern Railway, and Southern Railway assess demand and announce these trains to provide extra capacity, offering a crucial second chance for those who missed out on initial bookings.
How to Find and Book These Special Services
Finding these trains requires a proactive approach, as they don't always appear in a standard search months ahead. The best place to book is the official IRCTC website or mobile app. Look for announcements on the social media handles and press release sections of zonal railway websites, such as Western Railway or Southern Railway. When searching for trains on the IRCTC portal, make sure your travel date is near the festival. Special trains will appear in the search results alongside regular ones. For real-time information on schedules and availability, the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app is an invaluable tool. Bookings for these special trains often open on short notice, so it's essential to check frequently.
Recently Announced Routes for October-November 2026
For the current festive season, several key routes have been announced to clear the rush. Northern Railway has scheduled a special express between Varanasi and Delhi (04209/04210) to run multiple trips between October and November. Central Railway has announced a massive 418 special services, with daily trains from Mumbai's CSMT to Gorakhpur (01079/01080) and weekly AC specials connecting CSMT with Chennai (01015/01016) and Bengaluru (01013/01014). To manage the Navaratri rush, Southern Railway is operating weekly specials between Chennai Egmore and Kollam (06117/06118 and 06121/06122) throughout October. Similarly, Western Railway has extended services from Dadar to Bhusaval (09049/09050) until late November.
Essential Tips for a Confirmed Berth
Securing a ticket on these special trains can still be competitive. The key is speed and flexibility. Book the moment reservations open, as popular routes fill up within hours. If your travel dates are flexible, try searching for a day or two before or after the peak festival date, as availability is often better. Consider boarding from a nearby, less-crowded station if your primary station is fully booked. When booking, have your passenger master list saved on your IRCTC profile to speed up the checkout process. Finally, if you land on a waitlist, monitor your PNR status daily. Many tickets get confirmed closer to the departure date as cancellations occur.
