Start with the Safety Stamp: The FSSAI Logo
Before you even look at the protein content, turn the tub around and search for the FSSAI logo and its 14-digit license number. In India, this is a non-negotiable sign of legitimacy. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) certification
means the product has met basic safety and quality guidelines. It confirms the brand is registered and regulated, which is a crucial first step in a market where misleading claims can be common. Many products sold online or in gyms may have incorrect information about their protein content, and the FSSAI stamp provides a layer of protection, ensuring the ingredients are approved and tested for things like heavy metals.
The Nutrition Panel: Look Beyond the Hype
The front of the tub might shout “30g Protein!”, but the nutrition information panel on the back tells the real story. First, check the ‘Serving Size’. One brand’s scoop might be 30g while another’s is 40g. This changes the ‘protein per serving’ number significantly. To compare products fairly, a good trick is to calculate the protein percentage. Divide the grams of protein by the serving size in grams, then multiply by 100. A quality protein powder should generally contain 70-80% protein. For example, if a 33g scoop provides 25g of protein, that’s about 75% protein—a good sign. A typical quality serving should offer 20 to 30 grams of actual protein.
Protein Type: Concentrate, Isolate, or Plant-Based?
The label will specify the source of protein. For dairy-based whey, the most common types are Concentrate and Isolate. Whey Concentrate is the most standard and budget-friendly option, typically containing 70-80% protein, with the rest being small amounts of fats and carbohydrates (including lactose). Whey Isolate goes through extra filtering to remove most of the fat and lactose, resulting in a product that is 90% or more protein. This makes it a great option for people with lactose sensitivity or those on a very strict low-carb or low-fat diet, though it is more expensive. Plant-based proteins, from sources like pea, soy, or brown rice, are excellent for vegans or those who don't tolerate dairy well. Often, they come in blends to ensure a complete amino acid profile.
The Ingredients List: Fewer is Often Better
The ingredients are listed by weight, from most to least. The very first ingredient should be the protein source itself, such as ‘Whey Protein Concentrate’ or ‘Pea Protein Isolate’. If sugar, maltodextrin (a cheap filler), or an artificial sweetener is near the top of the list, you’re paying for more than just protein. Be wary of a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce. While some additives for flavour and mixability are normal, a simple, transparent list is usually a marker of a higher-quality product. Also, watch out for ‘proprietary blends’. This term allows companies to hide the exact amounts of each ingredient in a mix, making it impossible to know how much of the valuable components you’re actually getting.
Decoding the Jargon: EAAs and BCAAs
You’ll see terms like ‘Rich in BCAAs’ or ‘Full-Spectrum EAAs’ used as marketing buzzwords. Here’s what they mean: proteins are made of amino acids. Essential Amino Acids (EAAs) are the nine amino acids your body can't produce and must get from food. A ‘complete protein’ source, like whey or soy, naturally contains all nine EAAs. Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are a group of three specific EAAs—leucine, isoleucine, and valine—that are particularly important for muscle repair and growth. Any good quality protein powder will naturally be rich in both EAAs and BCAAs. You shouldn't need to pay extra for them to be added, and in some cases, brands might engage in ‘amino spiking’—adding cheap amino acids to inflate the protein content measured in tests. A transparent label from a reputable brand is your best defence.
