The 46-kilometre track climbs from Mettupalayam on the plains at 326 metres to the hill station of Udhagamandalam (Ooty) at 2,203 metres. This is the only rack railway in India, using a special toothed rail system to navigate the steepest track in Asia. The slow, deliberate climb through the mountains offers a nostalgic experience that modern transport simply cannot replicate.
The Unbeatable Route and Scenery
The five-hour uphill journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty is a visual feast. The train chugs through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around 208 sharp curves, each revealing a new, breathtaking vista. The journey begins across the hot plains and the Bhavani River before the ascent begins. Passengers are treated to panoramic views of dense shola forests, vibrant tea plantations, gushing streams, and mist-covered valleys. Key stations along the way include Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, and Ketti, each with its own colonial-era charm. For the most dramatic scenery, the section between Mettupalayam and Coonoor is often considered the most spectacular part of the ride.
Affordability for Every Traveller
Despite its world-class status, the NMR remains exceptionally budget-friendly. Ticket prices vary by class and route segment, but they offer incredible value. A second-class ticket for the full journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty can be found for around ₹295 to ₹450. For those seeking more comfort, a First Class seat on the same route typically costs between ₹600 and ₹1,100. Shorter trips, such as the popular one-hour ride between Ooty and Coonoor, are even more economical, making it an accessible experience for all travellers. These prices make the historic journey significantly cheaper than a private taxi, offering a far more memorable experience for a fraction of the cost.
The Onboard Experience
The journey is defined by its unhurried pace. As India's slowest train, it travels at an average speed of just over 10 kilometres per hour, allowing you to soak in every detail of the passing landscape. From Mettupalayam to Coonoor, the train is pushed by a vintage steam locomotive, its rhythmic chugging and whistling adding to the nostalgic atmosphere. At Coonoor, a diesel engine takes over for the remainder of the trip to Ooty. The wooden coaches with large windows are designed for sightseeing. For the best views on the uphill journey, try to get a seat on the right side of the train to look out over the valley.

Due to its immense popularity, booking tickets for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway well in advance is crucial, especially during peak seasons like summer (April-June) and holidays. The easiest way to book is through the official Indian Railways (IRCTC) website. You will need to use the station codes: MTP for Mettupalayam, UAM for Udhagamandalam (Ooty), and ONR for Coonoor. If you find tickets for the full route are sold out, check for availability on shorter segments, like Coonoor to Ooty. A small number of unreserved tickets are sometimes available at the station on the day of travel, but this requires arriving very early and waiting in long queues with no guarantee of success.
