A Taste of History
The practice of blending roasted chicory root with coffee isn't a modern cost-cutting trick; it has deep historical roots. Originating in 19th-century France during a time of coffee scarcity, it was a way to make limited supplies last longer. This tradition
travelled to India, particularly through British colonial influence, and became ingrained in South Indian culture. Over time, what began as a necessity became a preference. Many came to love the distinct, slightly nutty and caramel-like flavour, and the thicker body chicory gives to the brew, especially in traditional filter coffee. Today, for many households, a specific coffee-chicory blend is an essential part of their daily ritual.
The Economics in Your Cup
The primary reason chicory remains a popular additive is economic. Chicory root is significantly cheaper to grow and process than coffee beans. By blending chicory with coffee, manufacturers can lower their production costs and offer the final product at a more competitive price. This creates different tiers in the market, from premium 100% coffee to more affordable blends. A higher percentage of chicory means a lower cost for the manufacturer, which often translates to a lower shelf price for the consumer. The issue arises when two packets of coffee-chicory blend have similar prices but undisclosed, and potentially very different, ratios. Without knowing the exact percentage, a consumer can't make a true value comparison.
What the Rules Say Now
India's food authority, FSSAI, has regulations for coffee-chicory mixtures. For years, the rules have stated that any such blend must contain at least 51% coffee and that the presence of chicory must be declared. However, enforcement was an issue, with many brands not clearly stating the separate percentages. Recognizing this gap in transparency, FSSAI has introduced new rules. As of July 1, 2026, it is mandatory for all coffee-chicory blend packages to display the exact percentage of coffee and chicory on the front of the pack. This is a significant step towards empowering consumers with clear, upfront information.
Why Clear Percentages Empower You
This new rule on clear percentage labelling is a win for all types of coffee drinkers. For the budget-conscious shopper, it allows for a true like-for-like price comparison. You'll be able to tell if a cheaper brand is a genuinely good deal or if it's simply packed with more chicory. For the coffee connoisseur or the filter coffee traditionalist who prefers a specific ratio—say, 80% coffee to 20% chicory—this change removes the guesswork. You can find your preferred blend for the perfect taste and strength without having to blindly test different brands. This move is part of a larger consumer trend towards 'clean labels' and greater transparency, where people want to know exactly what is in the products they buy.
