A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express between Surat and Udaipur marks a significant milestone for Indian Railways and a major win for travellers in western India. This service directly connects the diamond and textile hub of Surat with the iconic
'City of Lakes', Udaipur, creating a vital high-speed corridor for business, tourism, and personal travel. The train is expected to be a game-changer, drastically reducing the journey duration compared to road travel, which can take eight to nine hours. This move is set to enhance economic ties between South Gujarat and Southern Rajasthan, providing a comfortable and efficient travel option that was previously unavailable on this direct route. The service is operated and maintained by the Western Railway zone.
Official Timings and Schedule
The Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express will operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The schedule has been designed to cater to both business travellers and tourists. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive at Udaipur City at 1:40 PM the same day. For the return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. The total travel time for this journey will be approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes, offering a swift and reliable option for passengers moving between these two key cities. The service will use an eight-coach rake, which is standard for many Vande Bharat routes.
Route and Key Stations
The train covers a distance of approximately 690 kilometres, traversing important commercial and cultural centres in both Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Railway Board has approved nine commercial stoppages along this route to ensure maximum connectivity. After departing from Surat, the key stations where the train will halt include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva (Ahmedabad), Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, before terminating at Udaipur City. These stops are strategically chosen to link major urban areas and developing towns, making the service accessible to a larger population across the two states. Primary maintenance for the train will be carried out at Surat, with watering facilities available at Vadodara and Asarva.
Replacing an Existing Service
Interestingly, the launch of this new train coincides with the discontinuation of another service. The Railway Board has also approved the withdrawal of the Udaipur City-Asarva (Ahmedabad) Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26963/26964). This service, which was introduced in February 2026, will now be effectively replaced and extended to Surat. This strategic decision extends the high-speed route, providing a longer and more direct Vande Bharat connection for passengers travelling between Gujarat and Rajasthan, rather than terminating the journey at Ahmedabad's Asarva station.
The Vande Bharat Experience
Like other Vande Bharat trains across the country, the Surat-Udaipur service offers a superior travel experience. These trains can operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, though the average speed depends on track conditions. Passengers can expect modern amenities including AC chair cars, reclining and rotating seats, automatic doors, and large windows for panoramic views. Onboard facilities also typically include Wi-Fi for infotainment, mobile charging sockets for every seat, bio-toilets, and an advanced Kavach safety system.
