A Welcome Change for Graduates
The narrative around the fresher job market is finally turning optimistic. According to a recent Career Outlook Report from TeamLease EdTech, the hiring intent for freshers has seen a notable increase for the latter half of 2026. The survey, which covered
over a thousand employers, found that 75% intend to hire fresh graduates between July and December, a rise from 73% in the first half of the year. While this two-percentage-point increase may seem modest, it signals a renewed confidence among Indian companies and a broadening of opportunities beyond the traditional domains. This growth is fueled by strong domestic demand, digital transformation across industries, and an expanding consumer market. For the millions of young Indians stepping into their careers, this shift means more choices and a more welcoming job search environment.
E-commerce and Retail Lead the Charge
The most significant hiring push is coming from consumer-facing sectors. Both e-commerce and retail have recorded the highest fresher hiring intent at an impressive 93%. This surge is a direct result of continued digital adoption and the expansion of online shopping into smaller towns and cities. Companies in this space are aggressively recruiting graduates for a variety of roles that go beyond the storefront. Freshers can find opportunities in sales, operations, supply chain management, logistics coordination, and customer-facing technical positions. The demand is less about glamorous titles and more about filling essential roles that support the massive scale of these growing businesses.
Manufacturing's Quiet Resurgence
Quietly becoming one of the strongest bets for fresh talent, the manufacturing sector shows a robust hiring intent of 89%. This growth is bolstered by government initiatives like the 'Make in India' campaign and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, which have spurred industrial expansion. The demand is particularly high for engineering graduates and those with skills in automation, robotics, and supply chain management. The sector is also seeing a rise in apprenticeships, offering a practical entry point for graduates to gain hands-on experience in manufacturing and engineering roles. This makes it a promising area for those with technical backgrounds looking for stable, long-term careers.
The Evolving IT and Tech Landscape
While the Information Technology (IT) sector remains the single largest employer of freshers, the dynamics have changed. The overall hiring intent in IT has seen a slight dip to 76% from 81% earlier in the year, suggesting a more selective approach from companies. The era of bulk-hiring for generic developer roles is fading. Today, the focus is squarely on specialized, job-ready skills. There is strong demand for freshers proficient in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), cybersecurity, cloud computing, and data science. Roles such as AI Application Developer, Junior Semiconductor Design Engineer, and Cybersecurity Analyst are among the most sought-after. For graduates, this means a degree alone isn't enough; certifications and practical projects in these high-demand niches are crucial to stand out.
Other High-Growth Areas
Beyond the top three, several other sectors are displaying healthy hiring appetites for freshers. The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry has an 86% hiring intent, driven by brand expansion and market reach. The travel and hospitality sector, rebounding strongly, shows an 81% intent to hire new talent. Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals also remain a consistent source of employment, with a 54% hiring intent, offering roles in R&D, med-tech, and clinical data management. Furthermore, the rise of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and a focus on green energy are creating new job categories in areas like renewable energy technology and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) compliance.
