When Rain Doesn't Bring Relief
For millions in India’s bustling cities, the monsoon is a welcome respite. However, the drop in temperature on the thermometer doesn't always translate to comfort. The season is increasingly marked by a stifling, humid heat that can feel more draining
than the dry heat of summer. This isn't just a feeling; it's a measurable phenomenon that scientists are tracking with growing concern. While rains lower the ambient temperature, they saturate the air with moisture. Recent data shows that this combination is creating a new and prolonged period of heat-related risk, turning a season of relief into one of sustained thermal discomfort.
The Science of 'Wet-Bulb' Temperature
The key to understanding this hidden threat lies in a concept called 'wet-bulb' temperature. It’s a measure that combines air temperature with humidity to reflect how hot it really feels to the human body. Our primary way of cooling down is by sweating; as sweat evaporates, it cools our skin. But when the air is already heavy with moisture—as it is during the monsoon—evaporation slows down drastically or stops altogether. This traps heat in the body, preventing it from cooling itself effectively. Even at a seemingly moderate temperature of 35°C, a high wet-bulb temperature can become dangerous, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke.
Why Cities Are Concrete Hotspots
This problem is particularly acute in urban areas due to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Cities, with their dense concentrations of concrete buildings, asphalt roads, and limited green spaces, absorb and retain more heat than surrounding rural areas. These materials release heat slowly, especially at night, preventing cities from cooling down effectively. During the monsoon, the excess moisture in the atmosphere gets trapped between tall buildings, further intensifying the humid heat. Research shows that in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, the number of dangerously humid days has been steadily increasing over the decades, a trend linked to both urbanization and warming oceans.
The Silent Health Toll
This combination of urban design and humid heat poses a significant, often overlooked, health risk. It's a 'silent killer' because the danger isn't just about extreme thermometer readings but about the body's inability to cope. Outdoor labourers, construction workers, street vendors, and the elderly are especially vulnerable. Persistent exposure to high wet-bulb temperatures forces the heart to work harder and can lead to severe dehydration, kidney problems, and cardiovascular strain. Studies by institutions like the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) have highlighted how this monsoon heat stress leads to higher electricity consumption from air conditioners, placing further strain on energy grids and household finances.
What Researchers Are Uncovering
Scientists across India are now closely tracking this phenomenon. Using decades of weather data and climate models, they are mapping the hotspots and understanding the drivers. Research from institutions like IIT Gandhinagar has revealed that uncompensable heat stress—conditions where the body cannot cool itself—is emerging more frequently during the monsoon, especially in the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Studies have noted a significant increase in warm nights and heightened humidity, particularly in dense urban districts. This growing body of research is crucial for developing better heat action plans that go beyond just summer emergencies and address the specific challenges of monsoon heat stress.
