for AI skills more than doubled compared to the previous year, showing a staggering 112.4% increase. This isn't just a minor uptick but a fundamental reorientation of the hiring landscape. LinkedIn’s data further confirms this, noting that India's hiring for AI engineering roles grew by nearly 60% year-on-year, the fastest rate among major global markets. This surge signals that companies are moving beyond experimentation and are actively integrating AI into their core operations. The era of treating AI as a niche specialisation is over; it is rapidly becoming a core competency.
What 'AI-Ready' Actually Means
The term 'AI-ready' extends far beyond being a machine learning coder. While foundational knowledge of Python remains important, the skills now in demand are more practical and application-focused. Employers are actively seeking expertise in areas like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which helps AI systems use external knowledge, and experience with vector databases. Practical skills in applying Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) are also becoming baseline expectations. But the shift is not purely technical. The market is increasingly rewarding what are known as AI-native behaviours: the ability to collaborate with AI tools, use critical thinking to validate their outputs, and maintain a high degree of cognitive independence. According to a joint report from NASSCOM and Indeed, a significant 40% of employers now prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a traditional degree alone, underscoring a move towards skills-first recruitment.
Beyond Tech: Which Sectors Are Leading?
While the IT sector is a natural hub for AI talent, the demand is now rippling across the entire economy. The need for AI capabilities is appearing in job descriptions for roles in digital marketing, graphic design, business development, and even teaching. This indicates that AI is becoming a tool to augment existing jobs, not just create new specialist ones. The manufacturing sector, for instance, has seen its share of AI talent quadruple since 2016.
