Forging a Divine Physique
To play a character known for his grace and strength, Ranbir Kapoor sidestepped the bulky superhero physique. Instead, his training focused on creating a lean, powerful, and agile warrior's body. His extensive regimen included a mix of functional exercises
like kettlebell conditioning, battle ropes, and stability ball workouts. Beyond the gym, his routine incorporated outdoor activities such as running, hiking, and cycling to build endurance and mental clarity. This physical transformation was supported by a disciplined lifestyle overhaul. Reports indicate the actor adopted a strict vegetarian diet and abstained from alcohol to maintain the purity and discipline required for the character. This holistic approach was less about superficial muscle and more about building the resilience and stamina of a warrior prince.
Finding the Voice of a God
Ranbir Kapoor’s voice is one of his signatures, easily recognizable in his many contemporary roles. However, for 'Ramayana', director Nitesh Tiwari wanted him to sound completely different. To achieve this, Kapoor reportedly underwent extensive and specialized vocal training with a dedicated diction expert. The goal was to develop a new baritone—one that conveyed the calm authority and profound serenity of Lord Ram, moving away from his familiar modern delivery. This process involved meticulous work on dialogue, ensuring that every word aligned with the director's vision for the epic. The focus on vocal modulation highlights the detailed preparation involved, aiming to make his portrayal distinct from any character he has played before.
The Mental and Spiritual Ascent
Perhaps the most crucial part of his preparation was the internal one. Ranbir himself has emphasized that understanding the philosophy of Lord Ram was more important than any superficial transformation. This journey into the character's mind involved years of disciplined spiritual practice. He reportedly practiced yoga and meditation for two years, working with a guru to get closer to the teachings of Lord Ram. This mental immersion also included extensive reading of various versions of the epic and meeting with scholars to deepen his understanding of the text. Director Nitesh Tiwari chose Kapoor because he felt the actor could portray the complex emotions of Ram—a man of few words whose pain could be felt and whose courage was immense. Kapoor's disciplined approach, which included minimizing distractions like his phone on set, was about embodying the character's core values of righteousness, compassion, and simplicity.
A Surrender to the Craft
Initially, Ranbir Kapoor was hesitant to accept the role, feeling he wasn't good enough to do it justice. However, becoming a father reportedly gave him the turning point he needed to embrace the monumental challenge. His preparation reflects a complete surrender to the director's vision and the demands of the character. Nitesh Tiwari has praised Kapoor's sincerity and dedication, stating that he no longer sees the actor during his performance, but only Lord Ram. This level of commitment is also evident in his approach to the dual roles he is reportedly playing, Lord Ram and his avatar Lord Parshuram, using body language and a deep understanding of their emotionality to differentiate them. This dedication speaks volumes about the actor's respect for the source material and the audience's expectations.
