The Old Logistical Puzzle
For years, planning a trip that included both mainland Vietnam and the island of Phu Quoc involved navigating a tricky set of rules. Phu Quoc has its own special visa exemption policy: travellers of any nationality can fly directly to the island from
an international destination and stay for up to 30 days without a visa. However, this exemption has a significant catch—it is only valid for Phu Quoc. If you wanted to visit Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City afterwards, you would need to secure a separate visa, a process that could be complicated and time-consuming once you were already on the island. This often forced travellers into rigid itineraries, either sticking solely to the island or planning their mainland adventures separately, creating a logistical barrier to a seamless, country-wide tour.
Understanding the E-Visa Revolution
The game changed with the broad implementation and expansion of Vietnam's e-visa program. Now available to citizens of all countries and territories, the e-visa is an electronic travel authorisation that you apply for online before your trip. It grants a stay of up to 90 days and, crucially, is available in both single-entry and multiple-entry formats. This single document covers your travel across the entire country, from the northern mountains to the southern deltas, and includes Phu Quoc. The application is handled through an official government portal, requires just a few documents like a passport scan and digital photo, and typically processes within a few business days.
Unlocking Seamless Itineraries
The e-visa completely removes the old barrier between Phu Quoc and the mainland. With a valid e-visa, you are no longer bound by the restrictions of the island-specific exemption. You can now craft the itinerary that best suits your desires. For example, you could fly into Hanoi, explore Ha Long Bay, travel south to Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City, and then take a short domestic flight to Phu Quoc to relax on the beach before flying home from there. Or, you could do the reverse: start your trip by unwinding on Phu Quoc and then fly to the mainland to begin your cultural tour. Domestic flights between the mainland and Phu Quoc do not count as exiting the country, so a single-entry e-visa is sufficient for this kind of trip. The e-visa grants you the freedom to move between destinations as if it were one cohesive territory, which it is.
Single vs. Multiple Entry: Which to Choose?
For a trip that combines Phu Quoc and mainland Vietnam without leaving the country, a single-entry e-visa is all you need. The government fee for this is currently USD $25. However, if your larger Southeast Asia plans involve, for instance, a side trip to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City or a visit to Laos before returning to Vietnam, the multiple-entry e-visa is essential. Costing USD $50, this option allows you to leave and re-enter Vietnam as many times as you need within the 90-day validity period. Choosing the multiple-entry option from the start provides maximum flexibility, preventing the costly mistake of voiding a single-entry visa by crossing an international border mid-trip.
How to Apply and Plan Your Trip
Applying for your e-visa is straightforward. Use the official Vietnam Immigration Department portal and be wary of look-alike sites that charge extra fees. You will need a digital copy of your passport data page, a recent digital passport photo, and details of your planned entry/exit points and temporary address in Vietnam. It’s crucial to apply well in advance of your travel dates. Once approved, you will receive a PDF of your e-visa. Be sure to print a copy and keep it with your passport to present to immigration officials upon arrival. With this single document in hand, the diverse beauty of Vietnam, from its bustling cities to its serene island shores, is yours to explore without the visa headaches of the past.
