Good News for Your Getaway
In a significant move for one of its largest tourism markets, the Thai cabinet has decided to scrap a proposal that would have ended visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. The decision, announced on July 14, 2026, puts an end to confusion that had
caused a noticeable drop in arrivals and bookings from India. Instead of facing more complicated and costly procedures, Indian tourists will continue to enjoy visa-exempt travel, a decision prompted by direct feedback from the tourism industry and the economic importance of Indian visitors. The Tourism Minister of Thailand, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, confirmed that the reversal was made to align with the travel behaviour of Indian tourists and support the country's vital tourism sector.
What Were the Proposed Tougher Rules?
The confusion began in May 2026, when the Thai government announced a plan to overhaul its entire visa framework, which included scrapping the generous 60-day visa-free stay that was available to 93 countries, including India. The initial proposal intended to move India from the visa-free list to a paid Visa on Arrival (VoA) system. This would have meant Indian travellers would need to pay a fee of around 2,000 THB for a much shorter stay of only 15 days. Furthermore, stricter documentation checks, including proof of sufficient funds of around 20,000 THB in cash, confirmed hotel bookings, and return tickets, were also part of the proposed tightening, creating anxiety for travellers.
Why the Sudden Change of Heart?
The answer lies in economics and market response. The mere announcement of the potential new rules, even before they took effect, led to a sharp decline of nearly 20% in tourist arrivals from India. India is Thailand's third-largest source of tourists, behind only China and Malaysia, making this drop a significant blow to the local tourism economy, which generated nearly US$50 billion in 2025. Recognising the immediate negative impact and the value of the Indian market, Thai authorities acted swiftly to reverse the decision. The move demonstrates the government's responsiveness to market dynamics and its commitment to maintaining Thailand's status as a top destination for Indian holidaymakers.
The New Official Rules for Indian Travellers
So, what are the entry rules now? Indian passport holders will continue to enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand. However, the stay duration has been revised. Instead of the previous 60-day visa exemption, the new rule allows for a 30-day visa-free stay. While this is a reduction, it is a far better outcome than the proposed 15-day paid Visa on Arrival. For the vast majority of tourists, this change will have little to no impact, as the average stay for an Indian visitor in Thailand is about seven to eight days. This new 30-day visa-free policy provides more than enough time for holidays, family visits, and business trips without the hassle and cost of obtaining a visa beforehand.
What This Means For Your Travel Plans
The key takeaway is that you can confidently book that trip to Bangkok, Phuket, or Krabi. The uncertainty is over, and the process remains straightforward. The new rules are expected to take effect 15 days after they are published in Thailand's Royal Gazette. While the 30-day visa-free access is confirmed, it is always a prudent practice for international travellers to carry standard supporting documents, such as proof of a return flight and hotel confirmations. As always, checking the latest advisories from the Royal Thai Embassy or your airline before you fly is recommended to ensure the smoothest possible journey. For now, the Land of Smiles remains as welcoming as ever for Indian travellers.
