The Shift from Agent to Aggregator
Not long ago, the neighbourhood travel agent was the gatekeeper to a family vacation. They had the brochures, the connections, and the knowledge. While offline agents still hold a significant market share, especially for complex itineraries, the power
has decisively shifted online. The rise of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, and Booking.com transformed the landscape. These platforms aggregated flights, hotels, and packages, offering unprecedented choice and price transparency. For the first time, travellers could compare hundreds of options in minutes, a task that was previously impossible. Reports suggest India's online travel market is growing at a remarkable pace, expected to reach ₹3.84 lakh crore by FY28, with online channels accounting for 65% of bookings by then. This migration is driven by convenience, competitive pricing, and a wealth of user-generated reviews that build trust.
Your Feed is the New Travel Guide
Inspiration for travel no longer comes just from magazines or word-of-mouth. It comes from your social media feed. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube have become powerful engines for destination discovery. A single viral reel of a pristine beach in the Andamans or a food blogger's journey through Old Delhi can spark travel plans for thousands. Studies show a huge number of Indian travellers, especially Millennials and Gen Z, use social media for holiday research. One study noted that over 89% of tourists use platforms like Instagram and YouTube for inspiration and information. This visual-first approach has also given rise to a new tourism lexicon, where destinations become sought-after for being 'Instagrammable'. Travel influencers and vloggers have become the new tastemakers, their authentic-seeming content often holding more sway than traditional advertising. This user-generated content is seen as more trustworthy, with one report finding 72% of Indian youths trust it over promotional material from travel agencies.
AI as Your Personal Itinerary Planner
The latest and perhaps most significant evolution in digital travel is the integration of Artificial Intelligence. Planning a multi-day trip with varied interests can be overwhelming. AI tools, embedded in chatbots and new dedicated apps, are stepping in to act as personal travel concierges. These tools can generate customised itineraries in seconds based on a user's budget, preferences, and travel style. The adoption rate in India is accelerating rapidly. According to a 2026 travel report by Agoda, 68% of Indian travellers are likely to use AI for planning their next trip, a significant jump from the one in three who currently do. Travellers are using AI for everything from finding restaurants and suggesting activities to comparing flight options. While most still prefer to have the final say, they are increasingly comfortable using AI as a co-pilot to handle the heavy lifting of research and comparison.
The Empowered Modern Traveller
This digital shift has created a new kind of Indian traveller: more informed, more independent, and more discerning. With endless information at their fingertips, they are no longer passive consumers of pre-packaged tours. Young travellers, in particular, are driving this trend. Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to plan shorter, more frequent trips focused on unique experiences rather than just visiting landmarks. They seek personalisation and value authenticity, often booking a trip based on a specific, unique stay they discovered online rather than the destination itself. This generation is mobile-first, with a report from 2025 indicating that mobile devices accounted for over 65% of online travel bookings in India. The entire travel journey, from dreaming about a place to sharing photos post-trip, is now a digitally native experience.
