Why Your Skin Needs a Softer Touch
The defining feature of the monsoon is high humidity. While it might seem like all that moisture in the air is good for your skin, it can have the opposite effect. High humidity disrupts the skin’s natural protective barrier, the stratum corneum. This
can lead to two seemingly contradictory problems: increased oiliness and dehydration. Your sebaceous glands go into overdrive, producing more oil, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. At the same time, a compromised barrier struggles to hold onto essential moisture, leaving the skin dehydrated underneath the surface slick of oil. This is why aggressive, stripping products often make things worse, creating a cycle of irritation. A comfort-focused routine aims to soothe inflammation, balance oil production, and gently hydrate, restoring equilibrium.
Cleanse Without the Squeak
The urge to wash your face repeatedly to get rid of the stickiness is strong, but it's a mistake that can strip your skin's barrier. Dermatologists recommend cleansing just twice a day with a gentle, pH-balanced, and sulphate-free cleanser. A mild foaming or gel-based cleanser is ideal for removing excess grime and oil without causing dryness. For those who wear makeup or spend time outdoors in polluted city environments, consider double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser to melt away sunscreen and impurities, followed by your regular gentle cleanser to wash everything away cleanly. This ensures your skin is thoroughly clean but not irritated.
Lightweight Hydration is Key
Skipping moisturiser during the monsoon is a common but critical error. When your skin feels oily, it’s a sign that it might be dehydrated and is overproducing sebum to compensate. The solution isn’t to dry it out, but to give it the right kind of hydration. Switch out heavy, creamy moisturisers for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are perfect for this season, as they absorb quickly without leaving a greasy residue. Look for products containing humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which draw moisture into the skin, keeping it plump and hydrated without clogging pores.
Soothe and Strengthen Your Barrier
With the skin barrier under stress from humidity, incorporating calming and strengthening ingredients is crucial. Niacinamide is a superstar ingredient for monsoon as it helps regulate oil production, reduces redness, and fortifies the skin barrier. Other soothing heroes to look for include Centella Asiatica (cica), green tea, aloe vera, and panthenol. These ingredients help reduce the inflammation and irritation that can lead to breakouts and sensitivity. Using a serum containing these ingredients after cleansing and before moisturising can provide a concentrated dose of comfort, helping your skin stay calm and resilient throughout the season.
Exfoliate Gently and Mindfully
Exfoliation is important for removing the buildup of dead skin cells and preventing clogged pores, which is especially needed in humid weather. However, over-exfoliating can severely damage your skin's already vulnerable barrier. Ditch harsh physical scrubs with rough particles. Instead, opt for gentle chemical exfoliants once or twice a week. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) like mandelic or lactic acid are great for surface exfoliation, while Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid are oil-soluble and can get deeper into pores to clear out congestion. Using these thoughtfully will keep your skin smooth and clear without causing irritation.
Don’t Let the Clouds Fool You
It’s a persistent myth that you don’t need sunscreen on cloudy or rainy days. The truth is that up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds, causing long-term damage like premature ageing and pigmentation. Daily sunscreen application is non-negotiable. To avoid feeling greasy, choose a lightweight, gel-based, or matte-finish broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. A non-comedogenic formula will protect your skin without contributing to clogged pores, making it a comfortable and essential final step in your morning routine.
