Why Humid Air Feels So Draining
When you exercise, your muscles generate heat, and your body’s primary cooling system is sweat. But sweat itself doesn't cool you down; its evaporation from your skin does. When sweat evaporates, it takes heat with it, helping to maintain a stable core
temperature. High humidity throws a wrench in this process. Humid air is already saturated with water vapour, meaning your sweat has nowhere to go. Instead of evaporating, it drips off or clings to your skin, making your body's cooling mechanism highly inefficient. Your body is forced to work much harder to prevent overheating, even at an intensity that would normally feel comfortable.
Perceived Effort: Your Body's Early Warning System
This struggle to cool down is what makes your workout feel so much tougher. This feeling is known as the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE). It's your subjective measure of how hard you feel your body is working. In humid conditions, your RPE will often spike before your heart rate does. Your body is already under significant thermal stress, diverting blood flow to the skin to try and release heat. This leaves less oxygenated blood for your working muscles, making every movement feel more laborious and causing you to feel fatigued much sooner. This increased perception of effort is a direct signal from your nervous system that the body is struggling with the environmental conditions.
Heart Rate Tells Only Part of the Story
While your heart rate will eventually increase to compensate for the added strain, it's a lagging indicator. The initial feeling of difficulty—the higher RPE—is your first and most important clue that you need to adjust. Relying solely on a heart rate monitor might lead you to push too hard in the early stages of your workout, before your cardiovascular system has fully responded to the thermal load. Studies have shown that during exercise in humid heat, both RPE and body temperature climb steadily, even if pace is constant, forcing the heart to beat faster to keep up. Therefore, paying attention to how you feel is a more accurate way to gauge intensity in these conditions than just watching the numbers on your device.
How to Adapt Your Workout for Humidity
Instead of fighting the humidity, learn to work with it. The key is to shift your focus from hitting specific pace or heart rate targets to maintaining a consistent effort level. Here are a few practical tips: 1. Run by Effort, Not by Pace: Accept that you will be slower. Use your RPE as your primary guide. If an easy run feels hard, slow down until it feels easy again, regardless of what your watch says. 2. Hydrate and Replenish: Proper hydration is critical. Start hydrating well before your workout and continue to sip water or an electrolyte drink throughout. Increased sweating means you're losing more fluids and essential salts. 3. Time Your Workouts Wisely: Avoid exercising during the hottest and most humid parts of the day, typically from late morning to late afternoon. Early mornings or later evenings are often cooler and less humid. 4. Dress for Success: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing made from moisture-wicking fabrics. This helps pull sweat away from your skin and allows for any possible evaporation to occur. 5. Choose Shaded or Indoor Routes: If possible, opt for a tree-covered trail or consider moving your workout indoors to an air-conditioned environment on particularly oppressive days.
