Meeting the Massive Demand
Every year, during the festive months of October and November, Mumbai's major railway terminals witness a massive surge in passengers. Millions of people travel to their hometowns for celebrations like Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. To manage this
incredible demand, Indian Railways announces special train services. This year, Central Railway is leading the charge with over 400 special services, supplemented by additional trains from Western Railway. These services are crucial for connecting Mumbai with high-demand destinations in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, ensuring that more people can make it home for the holidays.
Key Routes and Destinations
The newly announced services will depart from Mumbai's key terminals, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Bandra Terminus. Key destinations cover the length and breadth of the country. Daily and bi-weekly trains will run to northern cities like Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Banaras, and Mau. For travellers heading south, there are weekly AC specials to Chennai and Bengaluru, along with services to Kolhapur and Latur within Maharashtra. A weekly special service has also been announced between LTT and Thiruvananthapuram North (Kochuveli) for passengers travelling to Kerala. These trains are scheduled to run from mid-October through the end of November to cover the entire festive period.
How to Book Your Tickets
Securing a ticket on these special trains requires timely action. Bookings for most of these services have already begun or are set to open in the last few days of September. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the IRCTC Rail Connect app, and at all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. It's important to note that these trains often run as 'Special on Special Fare' services, meaning the fares might be slightly higher than usual and standard concessions may not apply. Given the high demand, tickets sell out within minutes of bookings opening, so it is essential to be prepared with all passenger details for a quick booking process.
Navigating the Festive Rush at Stations
Mumbai's railway stations like CSMT, Dadar, Thane, and Bandra Terminus become incredibly crowded during the festival season. To manage this, the railways have deployed additional security personnel, including the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP). Enhanced crowd management measures like designated holding areas, additional ticket counters, and clear announcement systems are being put in place. However, passengers are advised to do their part. Arrive at the station at least 90 minutes before your train's departure. Travel with light luggage if possible, and always be watchful of your belongings. Using the UTS app for unreserved tickets to get to the terminus can help you avoid long queues at local ticket counters.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
A little planning can make your festive journey much more comfortable. Always book your tickets in advance; relying on a waitlisted ticket during the festive season is a risky gamble. Pack essentials like water, snacks, and a power bank, as onboard services can be stretched thin. Always double-check your train's platform and departure time on the NTES portal or app before leaving for the station, as last-minute changes are possible. Finally, travel only with a confirmed ticket. The railways are taking strict measures against ticketless travel to ensure that genuine passengers are not inconvenienced.
