What is Prompt Engineering?
This is where your new strategy comes in. Prompt engineering is the art of giving highly specific instructions to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool, like ChatGPT or Claude, to get a precise and useful output. Instead of a simple request like, "Write me a cover letter," you provide the AI with detailed context, constraints, and source material. In job hunting, this means feeding the AI your resume and the exact job description. Your goal isn't to have the AI write the letter for you; it's to use the AI as a powerful assistant to generate a strong, keyword-rich first draft that is tailored specifically to the role you are targeting. Think of the AI as a collaborator, not an author. It helps you get from a blank page to a solid draft in minutes.
Step 1: Feed the AI the Right Ingredients
The quality of your AI-generated draft depends entirely on the quality of your input. Your 'prompt' should be a command that includes several key pieces of information. The two most crucial documents are the job description itself and your own resume or CV. By providing these, you allow the AI to cross-reference your experience with the employer's requirements. A powerful starting prompt might look something like this: "You are a professional career coach. Write a tailored cover letter for the [Job Title] position at [Company Name]. Here is the job description: [Paste full job description]. Here is my resume: [Paste your full resume]. Step 2: Use Prompts to Refine and Structure
The first draft is just the beginning. Now, you use follow-up prompts to shape the letter. If the opening sounds generic, you can command the AI: "Give me five alternative opening sentences that don't use the phrase 'I am writing to apply'." If you want to highlight specific achievements, you can ask it to: "Rewrite this paragraph to focus on measurable outcomes, like cost savings or efficiency gains." You can even use prompts to brainstorm ideas or find the right tone. For example, by pasting text from the company's 'About Us' page, you can ask the AI to analyze its voice and suggest ways to mirror it. This iterative process allows you to deconstruct the letter and rebuild it piece by piece, ensuring every part serves a purpose.
Step 3: The Final, Crucial Human Polish
This is the most important step. Never copy and paste the AI's final output directly into an application. Recruiters are becoming adept at spotting the overly polished, slightly impersonal tone of unedited AI content. Your job is to infuse the draft with your authentic voice. Read the letter aloud. Does it sound like you? Correct any 'hallucinations' or exaggerations the AI may have introduced. Add a short, personal anecdote that illustrates a key skill. Ensure the facts and timelines are 100% accurate. The goal is a letter that is strategically keyword-optimised for the ATS but also reads as a compelling, authentic story for the human hiring manager on the other side.
