The Game-Changer: Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail
For anyone travelling between Gujarat's economic hub, Ahmedabad, and the heart of Saurashtra, Rajkot, this project is the one to watch. The planned 227.6 km semi high-speed line aims to slash travel time to just two hours, a significant drop from the current
four to five hours by road or rail. With trains designed to run at a top speed of 160 km/h, this corridor will be a boon for business commuters and will effectively act as a feeder route to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train. The project, being executed by Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (G-RIDE), is a major step towards modernising inter-city travel within the state.
The Pilgrimage Pathway: Taranga Hill-Ambaji-Abu Road
This new 116.65 km line is poised to become a vital link for spiritual tourism, connecting three major pilgrimage sites: the Jain temples at Taranga Hill, the famous Ambaji Shaktipeeth, and Abu Road, the gateway to Mount Abu. Previously, reaching Ambaji temple required road travel, but this project will provide direct rail access for lakhs of devotees. Construction is already underway, involving complex engineering with numerous tunnels and bridges through the Aravalli hills. With an expected completion by 2027, this route will not only serve pilgrims but also create an alternative route between Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Decongesting the Core: New Lines on Busy Corridors
Many of the sanctioned projects focus on 'doubling' or even adding third and fourth lines to existing saturated routes. The Vadodara-Ratlam section, a critical part of the Delhi-Mumbai corridor, is slated to get third and fourth lines, which will ease congestion and improve the punctuality of both passenger and freight trains. Similarly, the doubling of the Adipur-Bhuj section will greatly enhance connectivity in the Kutch region, catering to both industrial needs and rising passenger traffic. These projects might seem less glamorous than new high-speed lines, but they are crucial for making the entire network more efficient and reliable for daily commuters.
Connecting the Kutch Outback and New Economic Hubs
Several new lines are designed to bring rail connectivity to previously underserved but strategic areas. A new line has been sanctioned to connect far-flung areas of the Kutch region, including the Harappan site of Dholavira, Narayan Sarovar, and Lakhpat fort, which will be a massive boost for tourism. Another significant upcoming project is the Sarkhej-Dholera-Bhavnagar line. This corridor is designed to support the new Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), India's first greenfield smart city and a future semiconductor hub. This line will provide vital connectivity to the Dholera International Airport and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex, transforming the economic landscape of the region.
