When winter blankets Kashmir in snow, most travellers head straight for Gulmarg. But beyond its famous slopes lies a world of quieter, equally magical destinations, each offering a unique and serene escape into a snowy paradise.
Pahalgam: A Tranquil Winter Escape
Often called the 'Valley
of Shepherds', Pahalgam transforms into a peaceful winter retreat that feels worlds away from the bustling crowds. While Gulmarg is the epicentre of skiing, Pahalgam's charm lies in its serene landscapes, where the Lidder River flows past snow-dusted banks and pine forests stand silent under a blanket of white. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking quietude and scenic beauty. Activities here are more relaxed, focusing on snow walks, photography, and simply soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. Key attractions like Betaab Valley are generally accessible and offer postcard-perfect snowy vistas. The nearby Aru Valley, a stunning destination in its own right, also becomes a winter wonderland accessible to tourists, offering opportunities for gentle treks and skiing. For a truly memorable winter experience, Pahalgam provides a slower, more contemplative alternative to the high-energy resorts.
Sonmarg: Dramatic High-Altitude Scenery
Known as the 'Meadow of Gold', Sonmarg was once largely inaccessible during the peak winter months. However, thanks to the opening of the Z-Morh tunnel in early 2025, Sonmarg is now a viable year-round destination, offering some of Kashmir's most dramatic, high-altitude snowscapes. The tunnel provides all-weather connectivity, bypassing the avalanche-prone zones that previously cut off access. This has opened up Sonmarg for winter activities like sledding, snow trekking, and simply enjoying the pristine, deep snow. While the town itself is now reachable, it's important to note that it's more of a scenic day-trip destination from Srinagar rather than a full-fledged resort like Gulmarg, with more limited facilities. Higher points like the Zoji La pass often remain closed, but the main valley and areas like the Thajiwas Glacier offer breathtaking winter beauty without the crowds.
Yusmarg: The Untouched Snowy Meadow
For travellers looking to venture truly off the beaten path, Yusmarg is a hidden gem. Located in the Budgam district, this expansive meadow, whose name is sometimes translated as the 'Meadow of Jesus', offers unparalleled peace and solitude. Less crowded than both Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Yusmarg in winter is a fairytale landscape of snow-draped pine trees and empty horizons. It's an ideal spot for those who want to experience the raw, untouched beauty of a Kashmiri winter. The road to Yusmarg is generally clear on most days, but access can be temporarily restricted after heavy snowfall, so it’s always wise to check conditions before heading out. Activities here are simple and nature-focused: think gentle snow walks to the Doodh Ganga river viewpoint, photography, and guided sledge rides across the vast, quiet meadow. With limited commercial development, Yusmarg provides a tranquil escape into nature.
Doodhpathri: The Emerging 'Valley of Milk'
Another emerging destination in the Budgam district, Doodhpathri, or the 'Valley of Milk', is a bowl-shaped meadow that becomes a pristine white expanse in winter. This destination is gaining popularity as a quieter alternative for snow lovers who want to avoid the main tourist hubs. Blanketed in a thick layer of snow, the meadows are perfect for activities like sledding, skiing for beginners, and building snowmen. Similar to Yusmarg, access to Doodhpathri can be dependent on weather, and the road may be slippery after a fresh snowfall, making a day trip from Srinagar the most common way to visit. While accommodation options are limited directly at the site, its proximity to Srinagar (around 45 km) makes it an excellent choice for a day spent amidst serene, snow-covered landscapes, enjoying stunning mountain views without the hustle and bustle.
