What Is BNPL and Why Is It Everywhere?
Buy Now, Pay Later is a type of short-term financing that allows you to purchase an item immediately and pay for it in installments over time, often interest-free. During festival sales, retailers heavily promote BNPL because it makes expensive products
seem more affordable by breaking down the cost. For shoppers, it offers instant gratification without an immediate full payment, which is why its popularity has surged, especially for online shopping. Unlike a credit card, approval is often instant with minimal checks, making it accessible to those without a strong credit history.
The Critical Question: Does BNPL Hurt Your Credit Score?
Yes, it absolutely can. While some BNPL providers might perform a 'soft check' that doesn't impact your score, many are now required to report your activity to credit bureaus like CIBIL. Every BNPL transaction can be recorded on your credit report as a small personal loan. Making timely payments can actually help build a positive credit history, especially for new borrowers. However, the real danger lies in missed payments. A single delayed or missed installment can be reported as a default, significantly damaging your credit score and affecting your ability to get loans for major life goals, like a car or a home. Too many BNPL applications in a short period can also lead to multiple hard inquiries, which may temporarily lower your score as it signals increased credit-seeking behaviour to lenders.
Guideline 1: Create a Strict Festival Budget
The biggest risk with BNPL is overspending. The ease of splitting payments can trick you into buying things you cannot truly afford, a psychological trap that fuels impulse purchases. Before you even browse the sales, create a detailed budget. Decide exactly how much you can afford to spend in total. Your BNPL commitments should never exceed a comfortable portion of your monthly income; a common rule is to keep all dues under 30% of your take-home pay. Track your spending meticulously. If a purchase doesn't fit within your pre-decided budget, don't use BNPL as an excuse to buy it.
Guideline 2: Read the Fine Print (Always)
Not all BNPL offers are 'interest-free'. Many have hidden fees, processing charges, or high penalties for late payments. Before you click 'accept', you must read the Key Fact Statement (KFS), which is now mandatory for digital lenders in India. This document will clearly state the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), all applicable fees, and the repayment schedule. Understand the consequences of a missed payment. Some providers may charge a flat penalty, while others might start charging high interest on the entire outstanding amount. Knowing these terms and conditions is crucial to avoiding costly surprises.
Guideline 3: Limit Your Services and Set Reminders
It's easy to sign up for multiple BNPL services across different shopping apps, but this creates 'fragmented debt' that is incredibly difficult to manage. Juggling several payment due dates dramatically increases the risk of accidentally missing one. To stay in control, try to stick to just one or two BNPL providers. Immediately after making a purchase, set up payment reminders on your phone or calendar. Better yet, enable auto-debit from your bank account to ensure payments are never missed, but make sure your account is sufficiently funded to avoid bounce charges.
Guideline 4: Know Your Rights and Alternatives
Under recent RBI guidelines, the digital lending space has become more regulated to protect consumers. You now have the right to a 'cooling-off period' (typically 3-5 days) to exit a loan without penalty if you change your mind. Lenders must also be transparent about all costs. If BNPL feels too risky, consider alternatives. The best option is always to save up for a purchase. Using a credit card responsibly and paying the bill in full can also offer better consumer protections for returns and disputes. Some credit cards even offer the ability to convert purchases into EMIs, which may have clearer terms than some BNPL services.
