A New Daily Connection
Indian Railways has introduced a new daily express service connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This service, which was flagged off on September 3, 2026, is designed to meet
the significant demand for travel along this popular route, especially for passengers heading towards Kankavli, Kudal, and Sawantwadi. The train covers a distance of approximately 510 kilometres, providing a crucial link between Maharashtra's capital and the picturesque coastal districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Officials noted that this addresses a long-standing need for a direct, daily train, which is expected to reduce pressure on other Konkan-bound services.
Schedule and Timings
The new service offers a convenient overnight option for travelers leaving from Mumbai. The train is scheduled to depart from CSMT at 11:55 PM daily and is slated to arrive at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the following day. For the return journey, the train will depart from Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and reach CSMT in Mumbai at 6:40 AM the next morning. This schedule is particularly beneficial for tourists looking to maximize their time and for residents traveling to their native places, especially during peak seasons like the Ganesh Utsav festival.
Route and Key Halts
To ensure comprehensive connectivity, the new express train includes 22 stops at key destinations across the Konkan region. After departing from CSMT, major halts include Dadar, Thane, and Panvel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. As it travels down the coast, the train will stop at important towns such as Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal before terminating at Sawantwadi Road. This extensive network of stops makes it easier for passengers to access numerous tourist destinations, historical forts, and religious sites scattered along the Konkan belt.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
The introduction of this daily service is seen as a significant boost for the Konkan region's tourism sector and local economy. Enhanced rail access is expected to make travel more comfortable and convenient for tourists visiting popular destinations like Tarkarli and Amboli, which are near the Goa border. In addition to this new daily service, railway officials have announced a large number of special trains to handle the festival rush. For this year's festival season, over 350 special services are being operated to facilitate passenger movement, with the possibility of increasing the number if demand requires. This new daily train, combined with the special services, provides passengers with more reliable and accessible travel options during one of the busiest times of the year on this route.
