More than just a train ride, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a journey back in time. Built by the British and operational since 1908, this engineering marvel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated along with the mountain railways of Darjeeling
and Kalka-Shimla. It is the only rack railway in India, using a special rack-and-pinion system to climb the steepest track in Asia. The 46-kilometre route ascends from Mettupalayam on the plains (326 metres) to the hill station of Udagamandalam, or Ooty (2,203 metres). Tickets for the NMR are in high demand and often sell out months in advance, especially during peak season. The most reliable way to book is online through the IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. Bookings typically open 120 days in advance. A crucial tip: when searching, you must use the station codes MTP for Mettupalayam and UAM for Udagamandalam; searching for 'Ooty' will not show results. You can choose between First Class, which offers cushioned seats, and the more budget-friendly Second Class. A small number of unreserved tickets are sold at the station counter an hour before departure, but this is a risky option due to long queues and limited availability.
The Scenic Route: Mettupalayam to Ooty
The journey is an experience in itself. The most picturesque and steepest part of the route is between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, where a vintage steam locomotive pushes the train up the incline. The train passes through stations like Kallar, where the rack rail begins, and Hillgrove, a scenic water stop. At Coonoor, the main intermediate station, the steam engine is replaced by a diesel one for the gentler ascent to Ooty. This section passes through Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti (home to one of the largest valleys), and the charming Lovedale station before finally arriving in Udagamandalam. Tips for the Perfect Ride
To make the most of your trip, a little planning goes a long way. Arrive at the station at least 30-45 minutes before departure to soak in the atmosphere and find your coach without any rush. There is no pantry car on the train, so it's wise to carry your own water and snacks for the five-hour journey. Also, note that there are no restrooms on the train itself, so use the facilities at the station before you board. Even in summer, the mountain air can be chilly, especially as the train gains altitude, so carrying a light jacket or shawl is recommended. And most importantly, keep your camera ready.
