A Policy Shift Opens the Skies
For decades, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was the sole custodian of India's space ambitions. However, landmark policy reforms initiated in 2020 changed the landscape entirely, opening the sector to private enterprise. The government established
the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to act as a single-window agency, facilitating, promoting, and authorising the activities of private companies. This strategic pivot was designed to transform ISRO's role from a primary service provider to a facilitator of research and development, allowing private entities to handle manufacturing and commercial launches. The goal is ambitious: to grow India's share of the global space economy from around 2% to 8% by 2033, targeting a market value of $44 billion.
The Trailblazers of the Private Sector
A new constellation of startups has emerged, quickly moving from blueprints to launchpads. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos have become the faces of this new era. In July 2026, Skyroot Aerospace made history by successfully launching its Vikram-1 rocket, becoming the first private Indian company to achieve orbital launch capability. This followed its earlier sub-orbital launch of Vikram-S. Similarly, Agnikul Cosmos successfully launched its suborbital test vehicle, Agnibaan SOrTeD, in May 2024, a mission notable for using the world's first single-piece 3D-printed engine. These milestones are not just technical achievements; they are powerful proofs-of-concept that have boosted investor confidence and demonstrated the viability of private space ventures in India, which now number over 400.
More Than Just Rockets
The commercialisation of space extends far beyond launch vehicles. The real economic multiplier lies in the downstream applications and services that become possible with more frequent and affordable access to space. Private companies are developing satellite constellations for earth observation, which have applications in agriculture for monitoring crop health, in disaster management for real-time data, and in infrastructure for tracking development. Other startups are focused on satellite communications to improve connectivity in remote areas, in-flight WiFi, and maritime services. This growing ecosystem includes everything from satellite manufacturing and propulsion systems to data analytics, creating a robust supply chain and generating high-skilled jobs.
The Economic and Strategic Payoff
When more rockets go commercial, the entire nation stands to benefit. Economically, a thriving private space sector creates a new high-tech industry, attracts foreign investment, and fosters innovation. The government is backing this with initiatives like a dedicated venture capital fund for the space sector. Strategically, having a robust domestic commercial launch capability reduces India's reliance on foreign providers for deploying its own satellites, enhancing its strategic autonomy. It also positions India as a competitive player in the global launch market, offering cost-effective solutions for other countries and companies looking to send their payloads to space. This state-enabled commercialization strengthens national capability while expanding India's diplomatic and commercial reach.
Navigating the Challenges Ahead
The journey is not without turbulence. Indian space startups face significant challenges, including intense competition from established global giants like SpaceX. Securing long-term, patient capital is crucial, as space ventures are capital-intensive with long gestation periods. While early-stage funding has grown, accessing growth-stage investment remains a hurdle. There is also a need to develop a skilled workforce with expertise in specialised fields like propulsion and avionics to meet the industry's growing demands. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks must continue to evolve to balance innovation with safety and national security interests, ensuring that the path to orbit remains clear and sustainable.
