method of cooling down: sweating. As sweat is released from your glands, it sits on your skin. The magic happens when that sweat evaporates into the air. This process of evaporation transfers heat away from your body, effectively lowering your skin and internal temperature, and keeping you in a safe, stable range. Think of it as your own personal, highly effective air conditioning unit.
How Humidity Sabotages the System
Humidity is the amount of water vapour present in the air. When humidity is high, the air is already saturated with moisture. This creates a problem for your body's cooling system. Because the air can't absorb much more water, your sweat has nowhere to go. It can't evaporate efficiently from your skin. Instead of vanishing and taking heat with it, the sweat just drips off or sits on your skin, leaving you feeling sticky and overheated. Your body's main cooling mechanism is effectively disabled, causing your core temperature to rise faster than it can be released.
A Cascade of Physical Stress
When your body can't cool itself through evaporation, it has to work much harder to prevent overheating. It tries to compensate by sending more blood to the skin to release heat. This creates a traffic jam in your cardiovascular system. Your heart has to pump harder to supply blood to both your working muscles for oxygen and to your skin for cooling. This dual demand increases cardiovascular strain, causing your heart rate to spike even at a pace that normally feels easy. With less oxygenated blood reaching your muscles, they fatigue much more quickly, and your perceived effort skyrockets. This is why a moderate run on a humid day can feel as strenuous as an all-out sprint in ideal conditions.
Why You Should Check the Dew Point
While most people check the relative humidity, many experienced runners and meteorologists argue that the dew point is a much better indicator of how a run will feel. Relative humidity changes with the temperature, but the dew point is an absolute measure of the moisture in the air. It's the temperature at which the air would become 100% saturated. A higher dew point means there is more moisture in the air, which directly impacts your ability to cool off. Generally, a dew point below 13°C (55°F) is considered ideal for running, while anything above 21°C (70°F) will feel oppressive and require significant adjustments to your pace and effort.
How to Adapt and Train Smarter
Fighting the humidity is a losing battle, so the key is to adapt. First, give your body time to acclimate; it can take up to two weeks of consistent exposure for your body to adjust by increasing blood plasma volume and sweating more efficiently. During this period, reduce the intensity and duration of your workouts. Focus on your effort level, not your pace. Hydration is also critical. Drink water before, during, and after your run to replenish the fluids lost through excessive sweating. Other practical tips include running during cooler parts of the day like early morning or late evening, wearing light-coloured, moisture-wicking clothing, and choosing shady routes whenever possible. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or unusually fatigued, it's a sign to stop.
