The Glass-Roofed Marvel on Wheels
The centerpiece of this popular journey is the Vistadome coach, a specially designed carriage that transforms train travel into a panoramic sightseeing experience. Featuring wide glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and an observation lounge, it offers
an immersive view of the dramatic landscape. The seats are a key highlight; they can rotate 360 degrees, allowing passengers to constantly face the most scenic side of the valley or socialise with fellow travellers. Each of the 44 seats also comes with ample legroom and modern amenities like Wi-Fi-based information systems and charging sockets, ensuring comfort throughout the trip. This European-style coach, manufactured in India, is fully air-conditioned, providing a cozy refuge from which to watch the monsoon magic unfold.
A Journey Through Clouds and Waterfalls
The route from Visakhapatnam to Araku is an engineering marvel that becomes breathtakingly beautiful during the monsoon. The train chugs through more than 50 tunnels and crosses over 80 bridges, creating a symphony of light and shadow that is particularly dramatic with the glass ceiling. During the rainy season, the Eastern Ghats are draped in a vibrant green, with countless seasonal waterfalls cascading down hillsides and misty clouds drifting through the valleys. The journey of roughly four hours covers a distance of about 115-130 kilometres, climbing from sea level to the cool climes of the Ananthagiri hills. For nature lovers and photographers, the views of lush coffee plantations, dense forests, and swollen streams make this one of India’s most picturesque train journeys.
Araku Valley in Its Monsoon Glory
While many tourist spots are best visited in winter, Araku Valley has a unique charm during the monsoon. The rains transform the region into a lush paradise, where the air is fresh and the landscape is intensely green. Key attractions like Katiki and Chaparai waterfalls are at their most powerful and majestic during this period. The famous Borra Caves, a network of million-year-old stalactite and stalagmite formations, take on a mystical atmosphere with the sound of dripping water echoing through the caverns. Visitors can also explore the Araku Tribal Museum to learn about local culture, visit the Coffee Museum to taste the region's famous organic Arabica, or simply enjoy a plate of the local delicacy, bamboo chicken, for a truly authentic experience.
High Demand and How to Book Your Seat
The unique experience offered by the Vistadome coach means tickets are in high demand, especially during the peak monsoon and winter seasons. The coaches often run at full occupancy, making advance booking essential. The train, the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger (08551), departs from Visakhapatnam in the morning. Tickets for the Vistadome (Executive Class or 'EV') can be booked online through the IRCTC website or app. Many travellers recommend a combination trip: taking the train up to Araku in the morning to enjoy the views in broad daylight and returning by car in the afternoon. The return train journey can be less scenic as it often runs after dark. To meet the rush, Waltair Division often plans to augment the train with extra coaches, but booking early remains the best strategy.
