The Game-Changer: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail
Arguably the most talked-about project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is steadily progressing. This 508-km line will feature India's first 'bullet train', operating at speeds up to 320 km/h. Within Gujarat, construction is advancing rapidly,
including the completion of major river bridges. The corridor will have eight stations in Gujarat, connecting key economic hubs like Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. The initial section from Surat to Bilimora is slated to open by August 2027, promising to slash travel time and boost business connectivity between India's financial capital and Gujarat's largest city.
Saurashtra's Superhighway: Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail
Connecting Gujarat's administrative capital with the commercial heart of the Saurashtra region, the Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail project is a critical upgrade. This 227-km line is designed for trains running at 160 km/h, which will cut the journey time from over four hours by road to just two hours by rail. The project, managed by Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (G-RIDE), is a test for a leaner semi-high-speed model that reuses existing transport corridors to minimize costs and land acquisition. This line will also act as a feeder to the main bullet train corridor, effectively linking Rajkot to Mumbai with a much faster transit time.
Boosting Kutch Connectivity: Adipur-Bhuj Doubling
To support the growing industrial and port traffic in the Kutch region, Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 49-km Adipur-Bhuj section. This project, estimated to cost ₹493 crore, will decongest a critical single-line route on the Gandhidham-Naliya corridor. The upgrade is essential to handle traffic from other ongoing projects like the Bhuj-Naliya gauge conversion and new lines to Jakhau and Lakhpat. Once complete, the doubled line will support an additional 12 million tonnes of freight annually and allow for more passenger train services, significantly improving logistics and travel in western Gujarat.
Connecting to the Capital: Vadodara-Ratlam Third & Fourth Lines
As a key section of the Golden Quadrilateral connecting Delhi and Mumbai, the Vadodara-Ratlam corridor is one of the busiest in the country. To ease this bottleneck, work is underway to add third and fourth railway lines along this 259-km stretch. This capacity expansion will allow for more passenger and freight trains, improving punctuality and speed. The project is part of a larger infrastructure push to strengthen connectivity between Gujarat and northern states via Madhya Pradesh, ensuring smoother movement for both people and goods.
Powering Dholera Smart City: New Sarkhej-Dholera-Bhavnagar Line
A new railway line connecting Sarkhej (near Ahmedabad) to Dholera and Bhavnagar has been proposed to provide crucial connectivity for the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). With a Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted, this line is envisioned as a modern corridor capable of handling high-speed trains. It will create a vital multi-modal transport network, integrating with the Dholera International Airport and the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway. This rail link is set to be a backbone for the new smart industrial city, facilitating the movement of goods and people to and from this emerging economic hub.
Upgrades and Decongestion Efforts
Beyond building new lines, several upgrade projects are underway. In Bhavnagar, a ₹125 crore yard remodeling project will decongest the terminus by shifting operational activities, which will improve train punctuality. In the Vadodara region, the 33-km Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line is being doubled to increase train capacity. Furthermore, with the state's broad gauge network now declared 100% electrified, the focus has shifted entirely to these capacity and speed augmentation projects, which promise a more efficient, faster, and reliable railway system for all of Gujarat.
