By combining smart transport choices with savvy food and accommodation planning, a trip to Oman can be more accessible than you think. Two destinations that perfectly capture this spirit of high value for low cost are the historic Nizwa Souq and the adventurous Wadi Shab.
Nizwa Souq: A Cultural Feast for Free
Located about two hours from the capital, Muscat, the city of Nizwa is Oman's cultural heart. Its main attraction, the Nizwa Souq, is a sprawling marketplace that costs nothing to enter and explore. Wandering through its maze-like alleys is an experience in itself. While renting a car offers more flexibility, the bus is a reliable and economical choice for backpackers focused on keeping costs down. Once in Nizwa, the main attractions around the souq and fort are easily explored on foot, saving you any further transport costs within the old city.
Wadi Shab: Nature's Adventure Playground
For a dose of adventure, Wadi Shab is an absolute must-visit. This stunning gorge, with its crystal-clear turquoise pools and a hidden waterfall inside a cave, feels like a natural waterpark. The best part? There is no entrance fee. The only cost is a mandatory 1 OMR boat ride to cross a river to the trailhead. After that, you are free to embark on the 45-minute hike through the canyon. Wadi Shab is located about a 90-minute drive from Muscat. Daily rental rates can be as low as 15-20 OMR. Pack your own snacks and plenty of water to avoid buying overpriced items at tourist spots. To make the most of your day, you can also visit the nearby Bimmah Sinkhole, another spectacular natural swimming spot, on the same trip.
