Why Weather Is a Powerful Disruptor
Indian Railways operates one of the most extensive networks in the world, but it is not immune to the forces of nature. Heavy monsoon rains, dense winter fog, and extreme summer heat can all have a significant impact on operations. Flooding can submerge
tracks, making them unsafe for passage. Recent incidents during the monsoon season have shown how quickly waterlogging can lead to the cancellation and diversion of services, particularly in low-lying or coastal areas. Similarly, dense fog in northern India drastically reduces visibility, forcing loco pilots to reduce speed for safety, which causes a cascade of delays and rescheduling across the network. Landslides in hilly terrains can block tracks entirely, severing connectivity for days while urgent restoration work is carried out. Even extreme heat can cause the metal tracks to expand, requiring speed restrictions to prevent derailments.
From 'On Time' to 'Cancelled' in an Instant
A common mistake passengers make is checking the train status once and assuming it will not change. However, the situation on the ground can evolve rapidly during a major weather event. A train that is marked 'on time' hours before departure can be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled as the weather worsens or as a result of disruptions elsewhere on the line. For instance, a landslide hundreds of kilometres away could mean your train is diverted or terminated short of its destination. An incoming rake running late due to fog at its origin point will inevitably lead to a delayed departure for its return journey. This is why rechecking the status, especially in the final hours before your scheduled departure, is not just advisable—it is essential for a smooth journey.
Your Essential Toolkit for Checking Train Status
Thankfully, Indian Railways provides several reliable methods to get real-time information. Your primary tool should be the National Train Enquiry System (NTES). It's the official source for all train running information. You can access it in three main ways: NTES Website: Visit enquiry.indianrail.gov.in/ntes/ to use the 'Spot Your Train' feature. Just enter your train number to get its current location, expected arrival/departure times, and any delays. NTES Mobile App: Available for both Android and iOS, the official app offers the same features as the website, putting live updates directly in your hands. * Helpline Number 139: This integrated Rail Madad helpline is your go-to for all enquiries and assistance, accessible even without a smartphone. By following the IVRS prompts, you can get PNR status, arrival/departure information, and more. It's available in multiple languages for convenience.
What to Do If Your Train Is Cancelled or Severely Delayed
Discovering your train is cancelled can be stressful, but knowing the rules on refunds can help. If Indian Railways cancels a train, passengers with e-tickets are entitled to an automatic full refund. The amount is typically credited back to the source account within a few business days, and you do not need to do anything. For counter tickets, you must surrender the ticket at a reservation counter within three days of the train's scheduled departure to claim the full refund. If your train is delayed by more than three hours and you decide not to travel, you are also eligible for a full refund. However, this is not automatic. For e-tickets, you must file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) online through the IRCTC website or app before the train's actual departure time. For counter tickets, you must surrender the ticket at a station before the train departs to receive the refund. Failing to follow these steps within the specified timeframes may result in you losing the right to a refund.
