Transit vs. Stopover: Know the Difference
First, it's important to understand the basics. If your layover is short and you do not plan to leave the international transit area of the airport, you do not need a visa. You can freely move between terminals to catch your connecting flight. However,
the moment you wish to step outside the airport—to check into a hotel, meet friends, or do some sightseeing—you are officially on a stopover and will require a valid UAE transit visa. This applies to all major hubs, including Dubai (DXB) and Abu Dhabi (AUH).
The 48-Hour Free Transit Visa
For many Indian travellers, the 48-hour transit visa is the most convenient option. It is offered free of charge and allows you to exit the airport and explore the UAE for up to two days. This visa must be arranged in advance and is typically sponsored by a UAE-based airline like Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, or Air Arabia when you book your flights with them. This visa cannot be extended, and your onward flight must be to a third country, not back to India. The 48-hour clock starts from the moment you clear immigration, not from the visa's issue date.
Need More Time? The 96-Hour Paid Visa
If a two-day stopover feels too short, you can opt for the 96-hour transit visa. This option gives you four full days to immerse yourself in the local sights and sounds. Unlike its 48-hour counterpart, this visa comes with a fee, which is approximately AED 50 (around ₹1,162). Similar to the 48-hour visa, it must be sponsored by a UAE airline and applied for before you travel. It's an excellent choice for travellers who want to turn their layover into a mini-holiday. This visa is also single-entry and cannot be extended.
Your Essential Document Checklist
To ensure a smooth application process, you need to have your documents in order. While requirements can vary slightly depending on the sponsoring airline, here is a general list of what is typically required: a clear, coloured scan of your passport's bio-data page (your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival), a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background, and confirmed tickets for your onward flight to a third destination. Some applications may also ask for proof of a hotel booking, especially for the 96-hour visa.
How to Apply for Your Transit Visa
The application process is entirely online and is usually done through the 'Manage My Booking' section of the airline's website you are flying with. For example, if you are flying with Emirates, you can apply for the visa via their portal after your flight is booked. The same applies to Etihad Airways. You will need to fill out the online application form, upload your documents, and pay any applicable fees. Processing times are generally between two to five working days, so it is crucial to apply well in advance of your travel date.
An Exception: Visa on Arrival
There's a key exception for some Indian passport holders. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit (with at least six months of validity) from the USA, United Kingdom, or an EU country, you may be eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival. This eliminates the need for a pre-arranged transit visa. However, it is essential to confirm the very latest rules with your airline before you travel, as regulations can change. If you do not meet these specific criteria, you must apply for a transit visa in advance.
