A New Chapter in Overnight Travel
Indian Railways is embarking on a significant upgrade to its long-distance passenger experience with the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Positioned as a premium successor to the esteemed Rajdhani Express, these new trains are not just
about speed but about fundamentally rethinking passenger comfort. While Rajdhani trains have been the gold standard for decades, their coach design has remained largely unchanged, leading to familiar passenger complaints. The Vande Bharat sleeper, developed by BEML in collaboration with Indian Railways, addresses these issues head-on with a passenger-centric design intended to make overnight journeys quieter and more restful.
Solving the Berth-Side Disturbance
A common grievance for passengers in AC 3-tier coaches, including those in Rajdhani trains, is the constant disturbance for berths located near the main entrance doors. The frequent movement of passengers, vendors, and the noise from doors opening and closing can disrupt sleep. The Vande Bharat sleeper introduces a clever layout modification to solve this. It features a sliding door at the entrance and creates additional space between this gate and the first set of passenger berths. This buffer zone effectively separates the sleeping area from the high-traffic corridor near the coach entrance, significantly reducing noise and light pollution for nearby passengers.
Rethinking the Climb: Ladders and Berths
Accessing the middle and upper berths in a conventional train can often be an awkward, and sometimes noisy, affair. The Vande Bharat sleeper features a redesigned, more ergonomic ladder that makes the climb easier and less intrusive for other passengers. Furthermore, the berths themselves have received a substantial upgrade. They are equipped with extra cushioning, surpassing the comfort levels of existing Rajdhani coaches. The sides of each berth are also cushioned, providing a more pleasant and comfortable journey for passengers spending long hours on the train. Ergonomically designed sleeping berths provide better body support, making overnight journeys more restful.
A Quieter, Smoother Journey
The quest for a peaceful night extends beyond the immediate berth area. The Vande Bharat sleeper incorporates several features aimed at reducing ambient noise and vibrations. The train is a self_propelled unit, unlike the locomotive_hauled Rajdhani, which allows for smoother acceleration and deceleration, resulting in fewer jerks. Fully sealed gangways between coaches create a quieter, dust_free environment and improve the efficiency of the air conditioning. Advanced air_spring suspension systems further minimise vibrations from the track, ensuring a stable and calm ride even at speeds of up to 160 kmph.
Modern Amenities for the Modern Traveller
Beyond the structural improvements, the Vande Bharat sleeper is equipped with modern amenities that enhance the travel experience. Each berth features integrated reading lights and USB charging ports. An advanced passenger information system with visual displays keeps travellers informed, while sensor_based intercommunication doors make moving between coaches seamless. The train also includes bio_vacuum toilets, which are more hygienic and environmentally friendly than conventional systems, with some First AC coaches even featuring showers with hot water. Enhanced fire safety measures and CCTV surveillance in all coaches add another layer of security.
