In response to this threat, a new category of security tool is gaining traction: the deepfake detection browser extension. These plugins integrate directly into web browsers like Chrome and operate in real-time during video calls and other web-based interactions. Their purpose is to act as a silent, immediate line of defence, analysing the audio and video streams of participants on a call. By scanning for the subtle tells of AI generation, these extensions can flag a potentially synthetic participant before a fraudulent request is ever made. This provides a crucial layer of security for executives who need to conduct sensitive business online, verifying identities without disrupting the flow of conversation. How the Technology Actually Works
Deepfake detection tools employ a range of sophisticated AI and machine learning techniques to distinguish between real and synthetic media. These algorithms analyse content for inconsistencies that are often imperceptible to the human eye or ear. Furthermore, real-world conditions like video compression and variable lighting can reduce the accuracy of detection tools compared to their performance in a lab. Security experts caution that technology is only one part of the solution.
