Most Earth observation satellites orbit our planet at low altitudes, capturing images of a specific location for only a few minutes each day as they pass overhead. GISAT-1A, which stands for Geo Imaging Satellite, is different. It is designed for a geostationary
orbit, a special spot 36,000 kilometres above the equator. From this vantage point, the satellite’s orbital speed matches the Earth's rotation, allowing it to remain seemingly fixed over the Indian subcontinent. Think of it less like a passing drone and more like a permanent, ultra-high-altitude watchtower. This continuous gaze is the key to its power, enabling it to monitor the same vast area without interruption, 24 hours a day.
The Power of Near-Real-Time Imagery
The true game-changer for GISAT-1A is its ability to provide “faster imaging.” The satellite is engineered to capture images of the entire Indian landmass every half hour and can focus on a specific area of interest to provide updates as frequently as every five minutes. This rapid refresh rate is a monumental leap forward. During an emergency, conditions on the ground change rapidly. Whether it's a flash flood, a cyclonic storm system, or a security situation, having access to a stream of updated images can make the difference between a proactive response and a reactive one. This capability transforms data from a historical snapshot into a live feed, giving authorities an unprecedented tool for making critical, time-sensitive decisions.
Transforming Disaster Management
For a country as geographically diverse and prone to natural calamities as India, GISAT-1A’s applications are profound. During cyclone season, the satellite can provide continuous updates on a storm's intensity, direction, and potential landfall, allowing for more precise warnings and timely evacuations. In the event of floods, which regularly affect states from Assam to Kerala, near-real-time imagery can help map the extent of inundated areas, identify stranded populations, and guide rescue teams to the most affected regions. In August 2021, the first attempt to launch its predecessor, GISAT-1 (EOS-03), ended in failure when the GSLV rocket's cryogenic upper stage malfunctioned, and the satellite was lost. For five years, ISRO has worked to rectify the issues and rebuild, making this mission a critical test of not only the technology but also the organisation's perseverance. A successful launch would not only fill a crucial capability gap but also serve as a powerful comeback, reaffirming ISRO's position as a leading space power and paving the way for future ambitious projects.
