What is the New Sleeper Train Plan?
Indian Railways is preparing to launch the country's second Vande Bharat sleeper train, connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru. This isn't just another train; it's a premium, semi-high-speed service designed for overnight comfort and efficiency. The plan involves
a 16-coach train with a capacity for 823 passengers, featuring a mix of AC First Class, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier coaches. Approved by the Railway Minister, the service aims to provide a significant upgrade over existing options, leveraging the advanced technology and passenger-focused design of the Vande Bharat platform. A launch is reportedly being eyed for as early as November 2026, though an official date is still awaited.
A Game-Changer for Travel Time
The most significant advantage of the new sleeper service is the dramatic reduction in travel time. Currently, the main direct train on the route, the Udyan Express, takes around 22 to 24 hours to cover the distance between the two metropolises. The Vande Bharat sleeper is expected to complete the same journey in approximately 16 hours, saving passengers anywhere from six to eight hours. This time saving transforms the journey from a full day of travel into a convenient overnight trip, making it a highly attractive alternative to both slower trains and even some flights, once airport transit time is factored in.
Route and Key Halts
The proposed route for the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat sleeper will connect several key towns and cities. The train is expected to stop at Kalyan, Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal, and Anantapur. This route, via Kalaburagi, was chosen as it is largely electrified, doubled, and suitable for higher speeds up to 130 km/h. The inclusion of Pune as a major halt is crucial, as it will allow passengers from India's key automotive and IT hub to directly access this premium service for travel to both Mumbai and Bengaluru. Tentative timetables suggest a late-evening departure from both Mumbai and Bengaluru, arriving the following afternoon.
Enhanced Comfort and Modern Amenities
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are a leap forward in terms of passenger experience. Manufactured by BEML in Bengaluru, the trainsets are designed with a focus on comfort and modern aesthetics. Passengers can expect state-of-the-art amenities, superior ride comfort, and a quieter journey compared to conventional trains. The coach configuration with multiple AC tiers is designed to cater to different budgets, with estimated fares projected to range from ₹2,600 to ₹4,250 depending on the class. This focus on a premium experience is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to attract passengers who might otherwise opt for road or air travel for long-distance journeys.
Part of a Bigger Infrastructure Push
This new sleeper service is not an isolated project. It is part of a massive nationwide push to modernise the rail network and improve connectivity. The Union Budget for 2026-27 announced seven new high-speed rail corridors, including Mumbai-Pune and Hyderabad-Bengaluru, envisioned as 'growth connectors'. While the Vande Bharat sleeper is a semi-high-speed service, it aligns with the goal of making train travel faster and more efficient. The success of the first Vande Bharat sleeper on the Howrah-Kamakhya route, which saw over 100% occupancy, has demonstrated a strong public demand for such premium overnight services, reinforcing the strategy behind the Mumbai-Bengaluru launch.
