A Landmark in Connectivity
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley by land meant navigating the often-unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a route susceptible to landslides and heavy snowfall. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla
Rail Link (USBRL) project has revolutionised travel in the region. This service provides a fast, reliable, and comfortable alternative, drastically cutting travel time and ensuring year-round access. The service first launched between Katra and Srinagar in June 2025 and was extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026 due to high demand, finally connecting the twin capitals directly by rail.
Route, Stoppages, and Timings
The Vande Bharat Express connects Jammu Tawi directly to Srinagar, covering a distance of about 269 kilometres. The journey, which can take seven to ten hours by road, is now completed in approximately four hours and 50 minutes. There are two pairs of trains operating six days a week, providing flexible travel options. For instance, Train No. 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and arrives in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return service, Train No. 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reaches Jammu by 6:50 PM. Key stoppages along this scenic route include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal.
The Udhampur Expansion
In a recent development announced in August 2026, Indian Railways has approved a third Vande Bharat train for the Jammu-Srinagar route. This new service (Train No. 26407/26408) will include a much-anticipated stop at Udhampur, addressing a long-standing demand from local residents. This addition will further enhance connectivity and capacity on this high-demand corridor, making travel even more convenient for passengers in the region.
Onboard Experience and Special Features
The Vande Bharat trains on this route are specially designed for the region's challenging climate and terrain. Coaches are equipped with a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system suitable for the valley's weather. To combat sub-zero temperatures, the train features special heating elements in the driver's cabin windshield to prevent fogging and self-regulating cables to keep water lines from freezing. Passengers can choose between AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car classes, both offering comfortable, rotating seats, large windows for panoramic views, onboard Wi-Fi, and a GPS-based passenger information system. The train is also equipped with the 'Kavach' safety system.
Fares and Booking Your Journey
Ticket prices are competitive, making the train an attractive alternative to both road and air travel. Fares for the AC Chair Car can range from approximately ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car is priced between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515, depending on the specific service. Meals are included in the ticket price. Booking is straightforward and can be done through the official IRCTC website or app, as well as at railway station counters. Given the high occupancy rates, especially on weekends, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance.
A Feat of Engineering
This service runs on one of the most ambitious railway projects in India's history, the USBRL. The journey includes passage over two engineering marvels: the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The Vande Bharat train now travels at speeds of up to 100 kmph on sections like the Katra-Banihal stretch, including across the Chenab Bridge, further reducing travel time and showcasing the project's technical prowess.
