Go Lighter With Your Moisturiser
That sticky, greasy feeling during the monsoon might make you want to skip moisturiser altogether. Don't. When your skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing even more oil, leading to breakouts. The trick isn't to stop moisturising, but to switch
your product. Ditch the heavy, oil-based creams you may have used in the dry winter months. Instead, opt for lightweight, water-based or gel-based moisturisers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin by drawing in moisture from the humid air without adding any oiliness or clogging your pores. This simple swap will keep your skin balanced, hydrated, and comfortable.
Never, Ever Skip Sunscreen
This is the most common mistake people make. Just because the sun is hiding behind thick, grey clouds doesn't mean its harmful UV rays have taken a holiday. Up to 80% of UVA and UVB rays can penetrate cloud cover, causing long-term damage like premature ageing, pigmentation, and tanning. In fact, you might be at greater risk if you skip protection on a cloudy day because you feel a false sense of security. Continue to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day. To combat the stickiness of the season, choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic, and matte-finish formula. Gel or fluid-based sunscreens are excellent choices for humid weather.
Supercharge Your Cleansing Routine
The combination of high humidity, sweat, and environmental pollutants during the monsoon creates a perfect storm for clogged pores, blackheads, and acne. A single wash at the end of the day might not be enough to get rid of all the grime. This is the ideal time to embrace the double cleanse, especially at night. Start with an oil-based cleanser to melt away makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Follow up with a gentle, water-based foaming cleanser to wash away any remaining residue and deeply clean your pores. For your morning cleanse, a simple gentle wash is usually sufficient. This two-step process ensures your skin is truly clean, allowing your other skincare products to work more effectively.
Exfoliate, But Do It Gently
With the increased humidity, your skin’s natural process of shedding dead cells can slow down, leading to a dull complexion and clogged pores. Regular exfoliation is key to keeping your skin bright and clear. However, be careful not to overdo it. The humid environment can make your skin's barrier a bit more sensitive. Instead of harsh physical scrubs, consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant containing AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) once or twice a week. BHAs are particularly great for monsoon weather as they are oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into the pores to clean them out, preventing breakouts.
Incorporate a Clay Mask
Give your skin a weekly deep-cleanse with a clay mask. It’s a perfect addition to a monsoon skincare regimen. Clay masks, made with ingredients like bentonite or kaolin clay, are brilliant at absorbing excess oil and impurities from the skin. They act like a magnet for dirt, helping to decongest pores and prevent the acne and blackheads that are so common this time of year. Using a clay mask once a week can help mattify your skin, refine your pores, and leave your face feeling fresh and revitalised without stripping it of its essential moisture. It's like hitting the reset button for your face after a long, humid week.
