Your Clean Coach on Demand
A dirty coach or washroom can spoil a journey. Indian Railways has a system called On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS) for many long-distance trains. To tackle real-time cleaning issues, the 'Coach Mitra' facility acts as a single window for passengers.
If you find your compartment or toilet unclean, you don't have to wait. You can request cleaning services directly to your seat. The easiest way is to send an SMS to 58888 or 9200003232 with the text: CLEAN <10-digit PNR number>. Alternatively, you can log a request through the Rail Madad app or website. Once the request is lodged, it is sent directly to the onboard staff, who are expected to address the issue, typically within 15 to 20 minutes.
Understanding the Linen Service
The rules for bedrolls—which typically include two bedsheets, a pillow, a blanket, and a face towel—have seen significant updates. This service remains complimentary for all confirmed passengers in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier coaches. A welcome change from August 2026 is that passengers with RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets in these classes are now entitled to their own individual bedroll kit, ending the previous practice of sharing. For those travelling in non-AC Sleeper Class, who historically had to carry their own bedding, a new paid service was introduced from January 2026. Passengers in these coaches can now book a sanitized bedroll kit for a nominal fee, either at the time of ticket reservation or, on some routes, from onboard staff. This bridges a major comfort gap for long-distance travellers.
What if Linen is Dirty or Missing?
If you are in an eligible AC coach and your provided linen is dirty, torn, or incomplete, you should immediately bring it to the attention of the coach attendant. Attendants in AC coaches are responsible for the quality and availability of linen. If the attendant is unhelpful or the issue isn't resolved, you have the right to file a complaint. Using the Rail Madad app is an effective way to document the problem, as you can select 'Linen' as the complaint category and even upload a photo as proof. Persisting issues with linen theft and quality have led Indian Railways to work on new policies for better inventory management and accountability.
Making Your Voice Heard: Rail Madad
For nearly any problem you face—from cleaning and linen to staff behaviour, catering issues, or broken fittings—Indian Railways has a centralized system called 'Rail Madad'. This is your primary tool for lodging a formal complaint. You can access it via the Rail Madad mobile app, its website, or by dialing the helpline number 139. To file a complaint, you'll need your PNR number, which automatically fills in your journey details. You then select the complaint category, write a brief description of the issue (including your coach and seat number), and can even upload a photo or video as evidence. This creates a formal record and ensures the complaint is directed to the correct department for resolution.
Other Ways to Report a Problem
While Rail Madad is the most effective digital tool, some issues require immediate, in-person attention. The Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) is the overall in-charge of the coach and should be your first point of contact for urgent matters. Complaint books are also meant to be available with the TTE and Pantry Car Manager. The all-in-one helpline number 139 can also be used for various queries and to lodge complaints via an IVR system or by speaking to an executive. For security-related emergencies, the dedicated Railway Protection Force (RPF) helpline is 182. Recent initiatives on select routes, like in the Northeast Frontier Railway, aim to have onboard teams resolve complaints within a two-hour target, demonstrating a push toward faster, more accountable service.
