Beyond the National Average
Every year, as the southwest monsoon sweeps across India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) releases data on cumulative rainfall. Figures like '90% of the Long Period Average (LPA)' or '102% of LPA' become headline news, often used as a proxy
for the health of the nation's agricultural sector. However, this single, all-India number masks critical realities on the ground. A 'normal' monsoon on paper can hide severe distress in key agricultural belts. The 2026 season serves as a perfect example. After a weak start in June with a significant deficit, a sharp recovery in July brought the cumulative numbers closer to normal. Yet, this recovery was not uniform, with many districts still experiencing shortfalls. This highlights the core issue: a national average means little to a farmer whose specific district remains dry.
The Crucial Element of Timing
For a farmer, when the rain falls is as important as how much falls. The timing, or temporal distribution, of rainfall must align with the critical stages of a crop's life cycle.
