Master the Booking Window
When it comes to festive travel, booking early is almost always the best strategy. For major holidays like Diwali and Christmas, flight prices rarely drop as the date gets closer. For domestic Indian travel, aim to book 45–75 days in advance. For international
trips back to India, the sweet spot is even earlier, typically 90–150 days out. For Christmas 2026, experts recommended booking between August and late October for the best fares. If you're planning for Diwali, the ideal window is often four to six months in advance. Waiting until the last month often means paying a premium as the cheapest fare classes sell out fast.
Be Flexible with Dates and Times
If your schedule has any wiggle room, use it. The most expensive days to fly are usually the ones immediately before a major holiday and right after. For Christmas, that often means December 22-23 and December 26-27 are peak-priced. Flying on the actual holiday, like Christmas Day or the main day of Diwali, can be significantly cheaper because fewer people want to spend the day in transit. Similarly, early morning or late-night 'red-eye' flights are often less popular and therefore more affordable. Mid-week flights, particularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, also tend to have lower fares than weekend departures.
Leverage Flight Comparison Tools
Don't just search on a single airline's website. Use flight aggregator and comparison tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Kayak to get a complete view of your options. These platforms pull data from hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies (OTAs), showing you different price combinations in one place. Google Flights is excellent for its calendar view, which lets you see price fluctuations across an entire month. Skyscanner is known for casting a wider net that often includes budget carriers that other search engines might miss. Set up price alerts for your desired route; these tools will then notify you automatically when the fare drops, so you can book at the optimal moment.
Consider Alternate Airports
Expanding your airport search can unlock significant savings. Major hubs experience the highest demand and, consequently, higher prices. If you live near more than one airport, check fares from all of them. Sometimes, driving an extra hour to a secondary airport can save you thousands of rupees. This applies to your destination as well. If flying into a smaller, less busy airport is an option, compare those prices. A short domestic connection or a few hours in a car on the other end might be a worthwhile trade-off for a much cheaper long-haul flight.
Think Beyond Nonstop Flights
While nonstop flights are convenient, they often come at a premium, especially during the festive rush. A flight with one or more layovers can be substantially cheaper. When booking international travel to India, flights connecting through major hubs in the Middle East (like Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi) frequently offer more competitive pricing than direct routes. Just be sure to check the layover duration. A very short connection increases the risk of missing your next flight during the chaotic holiday season, so it's wise to allow for at least a couple of hours between flights.
Use Your Points and Miles
The festive season is the perfect time to cash in on credit card rewards and frequent flyer miles. If you've been accumulating points from travel or daily spending, check the redemption value for your desired flights. Many travel credit cards offer significant sign-up bonuses and points multipliers on travel-related spending, which can be converted into flights. Given that cash fares are at their peak, using points can provide excellent value. Experts note that loyalty points often devalue over time, so using them for high-cost holiday travel is a smart financial move.
