The conversation around sleep and weight was recently clarified by a study that aimed to mimic the kind of mild but chronic sleep loss many adults experience. Researchers from Columbia University conducted a detailed analysis where participants cut their
nightly sleep by about 80 minutes for six weeks. The result was not a dramatic transformation, but a statistically significant one: on average, participants gained about one pound (around 0.45 kg) and saw their waist circumference increase by about half a centimetre. While a single pound in six weeks might not sound alarming, the researchers noted that this pattern, if continued over a year, could lead to more substantial and clinically meaningful weight gain. This highlights that even a small, consistent sleep debt can begin to tip the scales.
The Hunger Hormones at Play
So, why does sleeping less have this effect on our bodies? The answer lies in our hormones, specifically two that regulate appetite: ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin is often called the 'hunger hormone' because it signals your brain that it's time to eat. Leptin, on the other hand, is the 'satiety hormone' that tells your brain you're full. When you don't get enough sleep, this delicate system is thrown out of balance. Studies show that sleep deprivation leads to increased levels of ghrelin and decreased levels of leptin. This hormonal double-whammy means you feel hungrier more often and less satisfied after you eat, creating a powerful drive to consume more calories. Your brain's reward centres also become more active, increasing cravings for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods.
More Than Just Cravings
The impact of short sleep isn't just about hormones and hunger. The recent study also uncovered a subtle but important behavioural change. When participants were sleep-restricted, they spent an average of 17 more minutes per day being sedentary. This happened even though their time spent on intentional exercise, like going for a run or to the gym, didn't change. It suggests that a lack of sleep saps our energy for the small, non-exercise activities that make up our day, like walking around the office or choosing the stairs. This decrease in general activity, combined with the extra time spent awake with an increased appetite, creates a perfect environment for slow and steady weight gain. Sleep deprivation also dulls activity in the brain's frontal lobe, which governs decision-making and impulse control, making it harder to resist unhealthy temptations.

It is crucial to understand that getting eight hours of sleep is not a magic weight-loss solution.
