Why Humidity Wreaks Havoc
The core issue during the monsoon is humidity. Our hair is incredibly porous, and its structure is largely made of a protein called keratin. These keratin strands are held together by chemical bonds, including weaker hydrogen bonds. When the air is saturated
with moisture, water molecules are absorbed by the hair shaft, forming new hydrogen bonds and causing the hair to swell. This swelling lifts the outer layer of the hair, known as the cuticle, making it rough and prone to frizz. More importantly, this constant cycle of swelling and shrinking weakens the hair’s internal structure, leading to increased fragility and breakage. Hair that is already chemically treated or naturally dry is even more susceptible to this type of damage.
Signs Your Hair Is Weakening
It’s not just about the frizz. Weakened hair manifests in several ways, and spotting the signs early can help you take corrective action. Look out for a noticeable increase in hair fall, especially when you brush or wash it. Another key indicator is breakage—you might see short, snapped-off strands on your clothes or pillow. Your hair might also feel unusually limp and lack its normal volume and bounce, as the excess moisture weighs it down. A rough, straw-like texture, split ends, and a general lack of shine are other tell-tale signs that the monsoon humidity is taking a toll on your hair’s health.
Revamp Your Wash Routine
Your first line of defence starts in the shower. While it might be tempting to wash your hair daily to combat oiliness, this can strip your scalp of its natural oils, prompting it to produce even more. Stick to washing your hair two to three times a week with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo. Always follow up with a nourishing conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. This helps to seal the hair cuticle, locking in moisture where it's needed and blocking out excess atmospheric humidity. Once a week, swap your regular conditioner for a deep-conditioning mask with ingredients like keratin, argan oil, or shea butter to repair and strengthen the hair shaft.
Smart Styling and Protection
How you handle your hair post-wash is crucial. First, avoid vigorous towel-drying, which can rough up the cuticles and cause breakage. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel or an old cotton t-shirt. Minimise the use of heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons, as they further dehydrate and weaken the hair. If you must use them, always apply a heat protectant spray. A good anti-humidity or anti-frizz serum is a monsoon essential. Apply a small amount to damp hair to create a protective barrier. Finally, consider protective hairstyles like braids, buns, or ponytails to minimise your hair’s exposure to the humid air.
Nourish From the Inside Out
Topical treatments are effective, but long-term hair health is built from within. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients plays a vital role in strengthening your hair follicles. Ensure you're getting enough protein (from sources like eggs, lentils, and yoghurt), which is the building block of hair. Iron is crucial for preventing hair loss, so include spinach, beans, and nuts in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in flaxseeds and walnuts, help keep your scalp hydrated. Finally, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. A healthy body is the foundation for healthy hair, no matter the weather.
